Summer Event Calendar

June 10 - City of Harlingen presents Blues on the Hill at McKelvey Park. The event will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Free admission and parking. There will be food and drinks available.

June 15 – Quinta Mazatlan presents Birds of Prey from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sky King Falconry will demonstrate the athleticism and speed of raptors living in the Rio Grande Valley with a lie demonstration. This program is part of the Thursday Night Live series that takes place every Thursday evening through August. Quinta Mazatlan is located at 600 Sunset in McAllen. June 17 – You are invited to the McAllen Public Library for Bill Rich’s presentation of “Passion Flower Diaries” as part of their Texas Master Naturalist Series from 3 to 4 p.m. at 4001 N. 23rd St. Participants will learn how to grow these native, insect loving and beautifully flowered vines. June 17 – The Museum of South Texas History presents Summer Saturday at the Museum, an adventure through the Rio Grande Legacy exhibition, 1910 Jail and a makeshift store called La Bodega, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 17, June 24, July 1 and July 8. Admission to Summer Saturdays at the Museum is free from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Regular admission fees apply after 12 p.m. FRIENDS of MOSTHistory receive free admission as a benefit of their FRIENDship. June 22-24 – South Texas College Theatre and Dance will host their second annual South Texas Latinx Play Festival. The festival will be held at the STC’s Cooper Center for the Performing Arts at 3200 W. Pecan Blvd. in McAllen. The even showcases new plays written by Latinx playwrights throughout the US. Three plays have been selected to have a staged reading during the festival and directed by a theatre director along with a cast from the Rio Grande Valley. Each play will have a talkback with the playwright, director, and cast after the reading. Festival passes cost $10 and include admission to all three staged readings and a performance of Somewhere In The Miles. April 21 – Star-crossed lovers and an all-star piano soloist converge on this season finale program West Side Story by the Valley Symphony Orchestra. It will be held at 8 p.m. at the McAllen Performing Arts Center. For tickets and more information, visit https://valleyorchestra.org/concerts/.

April 22 – Blessed Assurance Children’s Shelter will hold their Bustin’ Clay for the Shelter fundraiser. Check-in will be at 7:30 a.m. with shooting beginning at 9 a.m. Lunch and awards will take place at 2:30 p.m. The event will be held at Casalan Ranch, 20011 FM 1847 in Rio Hondo. April 22 - McAllen Public Library is hosting a series of programs with the Texas Master Naturalist. The program slated for April is a Beginning Gardening and Composting class that will take place in Meeting Rooms AB from 3 to 4 p.m. Supplies will be provided for a hands-on planting activity. April 25 - Native Plant Project's guest speaker for the meeting in Weslaco will be Prof. Juan Gonzalez who is an associate professor of geology at the School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Science at UTRGV. His presentation will be about a recent initiative called, "The Ancient Landscapes of South Texas: Hiding in Plain Sight" in which he will explore the history of the Rio Grande Valley foing back 43 million years. Gonzalez will investigate the main geological events that htave shaped the landscape including the arrival of humans 12,000 years ago and Europeans in the 1700s. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Valley Nature Center, 301 South Border St. in Weslaco. There is no charge to attend. April 29 - The City of Mission will hold their annual Trash Bash. Sponsors and volunteers are needed. Volunteers will be offered a picni with food, fun and games after the hard day's work. Call (956) 580-8668 for more information. 

April 29 - PSJA will host their Annual Autism Acceptance Walk and scholarship fundraiser. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with the walk starting at 9 a.m. It will be held at the PSJA Stadium, 703 E. Sam Houston Blvd. in Pharr. 

May 5 – The Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce will hold their 2023 Mission Citrus Golf Classic. Registration is at 7:30 a.m., with tee-off at 8:30 a.m. Two mulligans are $20, Teams of three are $500. Fees include course fees, golf cart, gift bags, breakfast, and lunch. May 11 - An evening of prayer will be held at 7 p.m. at the Mission Event Center (Shary Rd.) with powerful testimony and healing prayers for mental health will be shared. Praise and worship will begin at 6:30 p.m. Mental health, behavioral health, medical professional, and service agencies will be on site to provide support services. 

May 13 - Sea Turtle, Inc. will host their Kemps Krawl-Sea Turtle Inc 5K Family Fun Run beginning at 8 a.m. at Sea Turtle Inc., 6617 Padre Blvd., South Padre Island. Runners will begin at the Holiday Inn Beach Resort. A Family run will begin at 8:15 a.m. that will include stations along the route with educational games and sea turtle facts to keep the whole family entertained.

May 13 - The City of Alamo will host their Watermelon Festival from 2 to 11 p.m. at Downtown Central Park, 800 E. Main St. There will be live music, carnival, food and more. For more information contact Lori Solis at lsolis@alamotexas.org or (956) 750-2322.

Alcoa Retirees Meeting

Widows’ Comfort Connection

Model Rail Roading & Railroaders

RGV Woodcarvers

The Rio Grande Valley Woodcarvers have begun their seasonal meetings. The woodcarvers are meeting at the Nomad Shrine Club, 1044 W. Nolana Blvd., in Pharr. The Carvers meet weekly on Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. through March. Everyone is welcome to come and visit and join the club. After a third visit, you will be asked to become a member with annual dues. More information can be found online at www.rgvwoodcarvers.org. Get ready to build/carve for the Woodcarvers Show in January.

April 1 – In partnership with Palm Valley Animal Society, join the McAllen Public Library for their Pet Adoption Day from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event includes a children’s pet-themed story time, adoption opportunity, and family movie. April 1 – The McAllen Monarch Festival will be held at Quinta Mazatlan from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults. Celebrate the event by wearing orange. There will be live music, dances, vendors, arts and crafts, special walks, a native plant sale, and food. Tickets are available at quintamazatlan.ticketleap.com.

April 2 – The McAllen Wind Ensemble will perform “Memories” at the McAllen Performing Arts Center at 3 p.m. Tickets can be purchased on the ticketmaster website or at the center. A season pass to all four of their concerts is $40. Ticket prices usually range from $7 to $17.

April 9 – McAllen Public Library will hold their Sunday Book Club and discuss the book Verity by Colleen Hoover. The discussion will begin at 2 p.m. Registration is required at mcallenlibrary.libnet.info/events.

Senior Slow Pitch Softball

The Ed Martens Senior Softball League meets on Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday. The games are in the mornings at 9 a.m. at West Side Park in McAllen on Ware Rd.
