If you don’t pay attention to our header on our paper each week, you wouldn’t know…. We have been publishing the Winter Texan Times since 1987. So, we are celebrating 35 years this season. What started as a bi-weekly paper by June Brann and Jim Brunson, has grown to a weekly paper during the Winter Texan season – October through March.
They saw the need 35 years ago, and the Winter Texan Times quickly became a staple in the Winter Texan community across the Valley.
Last week, the Brownsville-SPI International Airport held a ribbon cutting for the opening of a photography exhibit, “Women in Aviation and Space History.” This exhibit celebrates the accomplishments by women since the early days of aviation, to space exploration to recent commercial space flights. It consists of 35 images and will remain on display through January 22, 2022.
Christmas is fast approaching. Shoppers will soon be greeted by the familiar sound of The Salvation Army bells ringing at stores. But did you know that you can set up your own virtual fundraiser and be part of the Red Kettle Challenge without even leaving your house? This is a simple and fun way to engage your family and friends while supporting the red kettle campaign, The Salvation Army’s major fundraising event of the year.

It was the night before Christmas and a distasteful Rio Grande Valley Attorney by the name of Ezequiel Codos, played by 18-year-old Frankie Hooton, from Weslaco, was working late in his office while his overworked and underpaid employee Pablo Gomez, played by 16-year-old Raul Ceron from McAllen, typed away the water right contracts for Mr. Codos before heading home that Christmas Eve. Suddenly a charity worker comes in and Codos runs him out with snarls and complaints. He also throws out his nephew Beto who stops by to invite the old miser to Christmas dinner…and so goes the familiar story but with a twist of characters.
The Museum of South Texas History presents Fiesta de Nochebuena, a borderland-spirit holiday event featuring traditions, crafts and Cowboy Santa, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12.
Sharyland Pioneer High School has three more performances of Into the Woods. They will be performing at 7:30 p.m. on December 10 and 11th, and 2 p.m. on December 12. General admission is $10, seniors are $5. It will be held at their auditorium at 10001 N. Shary Rd. in Mission.
