Hello and welcome back to south Texas! We are so excited about what this year will bring. Parks are open for activities, the borders are open, and so many things have gone back to normal after a couple of years of conducting things a little bit differently.
Winter Texans love to volunteer
Thirty-five years ago, our first issue highlighted how much Winter Texans love to help while visiting the Rio Grande Valley. In this article I will give a throwback of the many places Winter Texans volunteered and give a snapshot of where Winter Texans volunteer today. Please join us in celebrating you and our paper’s history.
The 16th Annual 2022 Fiesta de Palmas is set for this weekend, October 21st through 23rd, and promises to be the biggest Fiesta yet.
The event is to be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the McAllen Convention Center and will feature a hefty line up of live music, carnival rides, diverse foods, and interactive activities.
The Humane Society of Harlingen dog kennels are at capacity. HSH is asking the community to help find foster or forever homes for their canine friends. Dogs will be at risk of euthanasia if they cannot make space through adoption or foster.
The Rio Grande Valley Woodcarvers have begun 2022-2023 seasonal meetings. The woodcarvers are meeting at the Nomad Shrine Club, 1044 W. Nolana Blvd., in Pharr.
Hilos de Tradición: Dresses of Mexico, an exhibition created in collaboration with the Brownsville Historical Association, opens at the Bullock Texas State History Museum this Saturday, October 1. The exhibition is presented in Spanish and English and features outfits that represent the traditional textiles, art, dance, and culture of every state of Mexico.

The Museum of South Texas History welcomes chef and author Melissa Guerra to the Sunday Speaker Series presentation, “Three Traditional Desserts of the Wild Horse Desert,” at 2 p.m. on Sept 25.
Every day, the Red Cross sees the heartbreak of people coping with effects of natural disasters. Red Cross volunteers who are licensed healthcare and mental health providers show up to meet needs. The American Red Cross, Texas Gulf Coast Region, invites you to join their team as a part of the Be One, Bring One campaign as the need for compassionate volunteers has never been greater. You can use your professional skills as a licensed healthcare or licensed mental health provider and volunteer to deliver hands-on care or mental health support to those in need. Free online training is provided, and you can earn continuing education hours. Apply today to become a Disaster Health Services or Disaster Mental Health Professional volunteer so those in need don’t have to face tough times alone.
A new mural celebrating the habitat restoration and conservation initiatives implemented by the City of McAllen at Quinta Mazatlán to protect the iconic and at-risk monarch butterfly was unveiled earlier today by Mayor Javier Villalobos. The artwork, titled “Destino Monarco” after the National Wildlife Federation’s monarch conservation plan, was created by the renowned artist Irving Cano.
Everyone is invited to join park naturalists and volunteers as they spot and count thousands of migrating raptors during our annual Hawk Watch.
Fall Hawk Watch begins September 1st at Bentsen-RGV State Park and runs through the end of October. The public is welcome to join our hawk counters to learn more about birds of prey and to participate in this important citizen science program.
