Masonic Winter Texan Reunion

For over 40 years, MN Masons have been spending their winters in South Texas and gathering with their fellow Masons from all over the country. The 41st Annual MN/TX Masonic Reunion will be held on Saturday, March 5, at the Rio Grande Valley Shrine Club, 13415 E Expressway 83 in LaFeria. The social hour will begin at 11:15 a.m., followed by lunch. Grand Master of Minnesota, M.W. Rolf Widstrand, will be the honored guest and featured speaker and Masonic Widows will be recognized. Back by popular demand, the Harlingen Community Theatre (HCT) will hold a reprise performance of The Marvelous Wonderettes. The reprise performances will be held for one last weekend. This smash Off-Broadway hit takes you to the 1958 Springfield High School prom, where we meet Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy, and Suzy: four girls with hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts. The Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas invites you to their 52nd Annual NDE DAA (Spring) Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas Homecoming Pow Wow from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Alton Recreation Center, 349 Dawes Ave. in Alton. A Badger Run and Ceremony will be held prior to the event at 7:30 a.m. Dancing and presentations will be held throughout the day. A Grand Entry will be done at 1 and 7 p.m. At the grand opening ceremonies, dancers will follow the guard into the arena dressed in beautiful regalia. Closing ceremonies will begin at 9:30 p.m. Celebrate and experience American Indian culture, history, drumming, singing and dancing from tiny tots to seniors. Vendors will be selling Native food, art, crafts, jewelry, supplies and wares. There will also be raffles and cake walks. The event is free.

South Texas College Theatre and Dance welcomes the first ever dance theatre production by a new Dance Collective. The premiere production Resilience will run on Saturday, March 5, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Performances will take place at STC’s Cooper Center for the Performing Arts Main Stage Theater at 3201 W. Pecan Blvd. in McAllen. General admission tickets cost $5. In order to allow for the recommended social distancing, all STC Theater and Dance events are held at reduced capacity. Seating is limited. The Museum of South Texas History presents “Women on the Warfront,” a spotlight exhibit available for viewing now through April 3. The exhibit will be supported by a Sunday Speaker Series presentation by the same name on Sunday, March 6 at 2 p.m. It will be presented by Melissa J. Peña, collections and exhibits coordinator at MOSTHistory. The Rio Grande Valley Gid-R-Done Bluegrass Band, made up of Valley Winter Texans, will perform from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Roadrunner RV Park, 1222 Chavez Rd. in Alamo. This event is a fundraiser for St. Jude. All performance proceeds to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. This will be their last performance of the season.

Follow the hearts for this nature-themed quarter mile walk through the woods with over twenty heart-art instal-lations. Programs following the theme will be offered throughout the month. The Museum of South Texas History presents the spotlight exhibit titled “Otis Bell’s Edinburg,” in observance of Black History Month, from Feb. 1 to Feb. 27. The spotlight exhibit will feature the full oral history, photos of Otis Bell and a variety of photographs of historic Edinburg locations. Visitors can view the exhibit in the Annex Hallway at MOSTHistory and it is included in the regular museum admission fee. The Mission Historical Museum (MHM) Presents the 16th Annual Mission Quilt Show exhibit. Quilts will be exhibited in the Museum’s Post Office building (200 E Tom Landry). The quilts will be judged by a panel of independent judges, with ribbons awarded for first, second and third places in each category. Best-of-show and Viewers’ Choice ribbons will also be awarded. Viewer’s Choice ballots will only be accepted in-person and through February 9th. An Awards Reception and Turning of the Quilts program will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 11. The Mission Historical Museum is located at 900 Doherty and 200 E. Tom Landry in downtown Mission. Admission is free.

The City of Granjeno will hold their 15th Annual Friendship Festival and Parade starting at 11 a.m. The festival grounds are at Granjeno Veteran’s Park, 6503 S. FM 494. There will be ven-dors, live music, a car and motorcycle expo, and a people’s choice award.

The Gladys Porter Zoo will host its annual Winter Texan Discount Day on Wednesday, February 2nd. On this day, Winter Texans will receive a special discounted admission rate of only $4.50 with proof of out-of-state residence. Additionally, the Zoo’s Docent Council will be conducting train tours throughout the day. SPI Kite Fest will descend once again on the town of South Padre Island. The festival kicks off Thursday evening with Indoor Kite Performances held at the SPI Convention Centre from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tickets for the Indoor Kite Exhibition are $12 per person and can be purchased or reserved in advance at B&S Kites (956) 761-1248. Tickets are not available at the door. The festival continues on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 4th and 5th) when the festival moves outdoors from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the flats just north of the Convention Centre. Workshop Wednesdays kicks off at IMAS at 4 p.m. live on Facebook with Surrealist Collage inspired by “Imagined Worlds: Exploring the Carlos Melguizo Collection.” This program is free for all registrants.
