RGV Woodcarvers

The Rio Grande Valley Woodcarvers will not be holding their Thursday morning carving meetings until further notice. The Nomad Shrine Club is being used for Covid19 testing. Meetings will resume when the testing is completed. RGV Woodcarvers will publish an announcement when meetings resume. If you have any questions, please contact Fred Stenman at (651) 485 0580.

Artville, the Brownsville Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Brownsville Museum of Fine Art and The City of Brownsville have partnered to create Calle Calaveras – A community wide event recognizing Dia De Los Muertos on the Texas/Mexico Border. Calle Calaveras is an artistic and cultural celebration of life, family, and the community, incorporating Brownsville’s Latin roots, all while staying COVID-19 safe. They have partnered with local artists to showcase the unique culture in an indoor and outdoor exhibit at the Brownsville Museum of Fine Art and Linear Park that will run through November 28. Various virtual and socially distanced events will be a part of Calle Calaveras, including a showcase led by Costumes of the Americas and more. The museum is located at 660 E. Ringgold St. More information can be found on the museum’s Facebook page.

The City of Edinburg’s Cultural Arts Division and the Edinburg Arts Foundation are proud to present Species at Stake, a Nature Photography Exhibition by Mujtaba H. Naqvi. The exhibit will be displayed at the Dustin M. Sekula Memorial Library and the Cultural Arts Division Virtual Gallery through December 11. Spanish Nights with Mario Aleman will premiere on Friday, November 20 at 7 p.m. on YouTube. An excerpt from Spanish Nights 2018, a dance production presented by UTRGV Ballet Espanol, Mario’s performance is an exciting blend of intense rumba flamenco rhythms, seasoned with impassioned, soul-stirring melodies, all topped with his fiery and blistering acoustic guitar work. Brownsville’s Holiday Village will premiere their Virtual Village that will be accessible any time and anywhere. Visitors will soon be able to enjoy the fun-filled, interactive site anytime and anywhere. The village will include 31 cottages for visitors to explore. They will also have coloring pages, games and other activities. And, as always, Fritter will arrive on Thanksgiving night and hide in a different cottage each day. The Virtual Village will be updated throughout the holiday season, so be sure to visit the page often. December 1 through December 30

The Festival of Lights “Season of Hope” will feature a two-mile drive-through attraction with millions of lights, castles, tunnels and hundreds of illuminated displays. Tickets start at $20 per vehicle, plus applicable fees, and include a four-pack of 20 oz. Coca Cola. Guests can purchase a Dash Pass for $40 and skip the lines. Through November 9, McAllen International Airport is hosting “Somos” and “Dia de Muertos” exhibits. With a partnership with the Consulate of Mexico, the “Somos” exhibit is a collection of 18 photographs that depict places, traditions, people, historic landmarks, and Mexico’s rich culture. The photos are by Mexican artist Mauricia Silerio. Additionally, the Dia de Muertos Altar exhibit, a featured installation from the Mexican Consulate honoring passed loved ones, will also be on display. The display will be located in the McAllen International Airport Lobby. The airport is located at 2500 Bicentennial Blvd.

Now through November 14

Visit the Sticks and Bones Trail at Quinta Mazatlan, an outdoor educational exhibit through the woods, open through November 14. Visitors will learn through signage, fun outdoor exhibits, and a scavenger hunt sheet. Remember your small gift bag upon completing the hunt and remember to dress for the season and laugh outdoors.

As part of UTRGV’s virtual concert series, a String Soiree with Diana Seitz and Joel Pagan will premiere on Friday, November 6 at 7 p.m. on YouTube. Enjoy works by Bach, Mozart, Hoffmiester, Halvorsen, Sibelius and Aguiar.

November 7

The City of Mission is honoring local military heroes with a Veterans’ Appreciation BBQ Saturday, Nov. 7. The drive-thru event at Mission Event Center will feature a chicken plate with all the trimmings, while supplies last. After the barbecue, community members can enjoy a Veterans Car Show from 3-8 p.m. outside the CEED building, courtesy of the 5 x 5 Brewing Company. There will be plenty of family-friendly entertainment including live local music and a food truck court. Masks and social distancing will be enforced.

To cap off the tribute, the inaugural City of Mission Veterans Virtual 5K will be held, with a Veterans Day themed run that is perfect for the whole family. The fun includes great swag including a bib, shirt and custom medal, along with online results for the running community. The registration deadline for a guaranteed t-shirt is Friday October 23. November 7 and 8

Fiesta de Palmas, presented by Reliant, will be celebrated this weekend, Saturday, November 7 and Sunday, November 8, at Oval Park at the McAllen Convention Center, 700 Convention Center Boulevard. The event will feature social distanced, drive-through, curbside and virtual activities.

The fun starts at 12 p.m. each day with a drive-through food truck festival, ending at 9 p.m. There is no cost to drive-through – just the cost of food – but attendees must stay in their vehicles. Once food is selected and ordered, it will be delivered by a person wearing personal protective equipment. The on-site festivities kick-off on Saturday at 2 p.m. and continuing through 9 p.m. Prices and more information can be found in the full story on Page 2.

November 11

The City of Edinburg Library and Cultural Arts will be hosting a Veterans Day virtual Parade. They will be celebrating their hometown heroes during the event. You can tune into the virtual event on Facebook Live (facebook.com/CityOfEdinburgGovernment) and Spectrum 1300 on November 11 at 10 a.m. If you are part of the Edinburg community, you are invited to send in a picture of Veterans or Active Military who were originally from Edinburg, lived in or currently live in Edinburg for inclusion in the virtual parade. They are also accepting family groups, Veterans groups, organizations and business video submissions. The City of Edinburg, as a leader of cultural celebration, will be joined by the Museum of South Texas History to bring the Rio Grande Valley the annual day of the dead celebration. Dia de los Muertos: Los Muertos Bailan is the largest cultural festival that takes place in the City of Edinburg. This pre-celebration is a fun, educational and culturally relevant event to the Valley community. The event kicked off on Monday, October 19 with a dance to commemorate the pre-Hispanic origins of the celebration of the Day of the Dead. Events will be held daily during the two-week event. October 23

The Valley Symphony Orchestra will present The Symphony Strings, featuring the VSO Piano Quintet.
The October 23 concert will feature the VSO piano quintet performing Erno Dohnányi’s piano quintet no. 1 in C minor. Dohnányi, often referred to as “the greatest composer you’ve never heard,” stood in the shadow of great classical composers such as Brahms and Liszt, and wrote this piece when he was just 17 years old. The work features two violins, viola, cello, and piano and is performed in four movements, or sections. Described as catchy and melodic, its full sounds remind the listener of a performance by an entire symphony orchestra.
The VSO string quintet consists of Geoffrey Wong, VSO Concertmaster (violin), Lindsey Gamble (violin), VSO Assistant Concertmaster, Jennifer Miller (viola), Benjamin Ponder (cello), and Juan Pablo Andrade (piano). The quintet's performance will premiere on October 23 at 7 p.m. on Facebook and be broadcast on October 25 at 11 a.m. on KRGV – Channel 5.
