RGV Quilt ShowThis weekend the Rio Grande Valley Quilt Show will be held virtually. This year the RGV Quilt Guild will be conducting the show, workshops and more online. The event will be held February 8 through 14. The theme for this year is “From Vintage to Modern – Quilts for All Times.” The quilt guild invites participants and attendees to immerse themselves in the history, nostalgia and even look into the future of quilting.

A special Zoom class for the show will be presented on Monday, February 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The class is titled “A Wonky Star: Improv with a Vintage Twist.” You do not need to be a member to register for the class. The fee for the class is $40.

Participants of the class will embrace the magic as they are given permission to combine the love of vintage with a fun modern aesthetic. Work with vintage textiles to create a wonky star with lots of negative space for modern quilting designs. The workshop is packed full of tips for working with vintage fragments and ways to showcase these treasured pieces. Students are encouraged to use their own vintage blocks and fragments, or they may purchase a kit. Vintage kits are available for $20 and may be purchased and paid directly to Mary Kerr. Laurie Magee also has vintage fabrics available for a $20 donation to the RGV Quilt Guild. Finished sizes of the quilt will vary. All information can be found at http://rgvquiltshow.org/#.

Mary Kerr will be the presenter of the special class. She is an American Quilt Society certified appraiser and an award-winning quilter.

Other lectures include Civil War Quilts by Alison Rainboth, 19th Century New York Quilts by Sharon Waddell, Cotton and Thrift: 20th Century Feedsacks by Marian Ann Montgomery and Graphic Quilts of the 20th Century by Tara Miller.

Categories presented in the show are the 2021 challenge: When Someone Quilts a Memory, Modern Quilts, Quilts of the Past: Vintage/Antique Quilts with a Story, Quilts of Today, Art Quilts, Quilts of Tomorrow, and Quilting Paraphernalia Exhibit.
