20221026 Keynote Elizabth Gonzalez webCelebrate the Rio Grande Valley’s amazing diversity of plants at this year’s Planta Nativa Social at Quinta Mazatlan. On October 27, from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m., Quinta Mazatlan invites you to enjoy a native plant seed giveaway, native plant sale, food vendors, live music, a keynote presentation on an LED screen under the stars, and more.

The keynote speaker at this year’s Planta Nativa Social is Elizabeth Gonzalez, presenting “Nowhere but the Valley: The Research of the Rare Prostrate Milkweed.” The Rio Grande Valley is home to some of the most unique species of plant in the world. Just recently, the Prostrate Milkweed - a rare milkweed only found in southernmost Texas and northern Mexico - was proposed to be listed as a federally endangered species. It is a host plant for the declining Monarch butterfly and a nectar plant for many pollinators. Gonzalez, a researcher studying the species for the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, will share how they got involved in the research and about the rare milkweed.

Also, at the Planta Nativa Social, there will be a native plant sale from Heep’s LRGV Native Plant Nursery, a native seed giveaway hosted by the Native Plant Project, and a Native Plant Swap with the Center for Urban Ecology at Quinta Mazatlan.

The Planta Nativa Social will be held at Quinta Mazatlan, 600 Sunset Drive, McAllen, Texas, from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. Please purchase your $5 tickets in advance at quintamazatlan.ticketleap.com. Call (956) 681-3370 for more information regarding this fun evening with your friends in the park.
