Alcoa Retirees Meeting

Widows’ Comfort Connection

Model Rail Roading & Railroaders

RGV Woodcarvers

The Rio Grande Valley Woodcarvers have begun their seasonal meetings. The woodcarvers are meeting at the Nomad Shrine Club, 1044 W. Nolana Blvd., in Pharr. The Carvers meet weekly on Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. through March. Everyone is welcome to come and visit and join the club. Get ready to build/carve for the Woodcarvers Show in January.

April 1 – In partnership with Palm Valley Animal Society, join the McAllen Public Library for their Pet Adoption Day from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event includes a children’s pet-themed story time, adoption opportunity, and family movie. Donations will be accepted for PVAS. The library is located at 4001 N. 23rd. St.

April 1 – The McAllen Monarch Festival will be held at Quinta Mazatlan from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults. Celebrate the event by wearing orange. There will be live music, dances, vendors, arts and crafts, special walks, a native plant sale, and food. Tickets are available at quintamazatlan.ticketleap.com.

April 2 – The McAllen Wind Ensemble will perform “Memories” at the McAllen Performing Arts Center at 3 p.m. Tickets can be purchased on the ticketmaster website or at the center. A season pass to all four of their concerts is $40. Ticket prices usually range from $7 to $17.

April 9 – McAllen Public Library will hold their Sunday Book Club and discuss the book Verity by Colleen Hoover. The discussion will begin at 2 p.m. Registration is required at mcallenlibrary.libnet.info/events.

April 15 – IMAS will host their 15th Annual Night at the Brew-seum fundraiser that benefits IMAS and supports year-round art and science education in the Rio Grande Valley. For more information visit www.brewseum.com or www.theimasonline.org.

April 22 – Blessed Assurance Children’s Shelter will hold their Bustin’ Clay for the Shelter fundraiser. Check-in will be at 7:30 a.m. with shooting beginning at 9 a.m. Lunch and awards will take place at 2:30 p.m. The event will be held at Casalan Ranch, 20011 FM 1847 in Rio Hondo. May 5 – The Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce will hold their 2023 Mission Citrus Golf Classic. Registration is at 7:30 a.m., with tee-off at 8:30 a.m. Two mulligans are $20, Teams of three are $500. Fees include course fees, golf cart, gift bags, breakfast, and lunch. The Winter Texan Newmar Luncheons will be held at The Golden Corral at 1301 E. Jackson Ave, in McAllen. It will be held March 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There is a reservation deadline usually two days before event. Be sure to tell the host you are with the Newmar group when you arrive. Senior Ambassadors

The Senior Ambassadors is looking for singers to join their chorus. Senior Ambassadors is composed of men from the Valley and Winter Texan community. They perform choral music from sacred and semi classical, to pop and country. Practice sessions are held each Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Bentsen Grove Resort (1645 S. Bentsen Rd.) in Mission. They perform 10 to 12 times each season at various venues in the RGV. For more information, call Paul Hunter (956) 310-9515.

February 22, 2023 - Events Calendar

February 4-25 – The Hidalgo Watercolor Society will have their Annual Watercolor Exhibit with an opening reception on Saturday, February 4th from 7 to 9 p.m. This exhibit is free and open to the public. The exhibit will be displayed at the Upper Valley Art League (UVAL) at 921 E. 12th St., in Mission, and will run through February 25th. The exhibit features art made by Winter Texans and local artists. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

February 23 – Join Quinta Mazatlan for Foraging for Native Edibles Tour at 5 p.m. The program fee is $5 per person with advance registration requested via www.quintamazatlan.ticketleap.com.

February 23, 25, 26 – South Texas College Theatre and Dance present Animal Farm at 7:30 p.m. on February 23 and 25, and 2 p.m. on February 26. Performances will take place at STC’s Cooper Center for the Performing Arts Black Box at 3200 W. Pecan Blvd. in McAllen.

February 24-26 – SPI Market Days will be held at the South Padre Island Convention Center, 7355 Padre Blvd., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The market will feature fine art, handcrafted jewelry, clothing, arts and crafts, gourmet food mixes, product demos, pet items, live music and more. There will also be door prizes. Parking is free. February 25 – Join the McAllen Public Library for their Third World Language Festival. Celebrate international cultures and languages by experiencing international food tasting, crafts and activities by community organizations and performances. All ages welcome. February 28 – Join Speer Memorial Library for a book discussion of The Rosie Project, in the Community Room at 5:30 p.m. in Spanish and 6:30 p.m. in English. February 28 – Native Plant Project’s guest speaker for the meeting in Weslaco will be Robert Gaitan, president of the Rio Grande Valley Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalists. February 27, 28, March 2 – MOSTH will host FESTIBA presentations online. February 27th will be a one-hour presentation featuring letters written by Sgt. Gonzalez, a Vietnam War hero, at 10 a.m. Melissa Pena will share details on building spotlight exhibits at the museum through her presentation on February 28 at 11 a.m. March 2 will be a presentation about Will Looney Legacy Park.
