December 20, 2023 - Events Calendar

Now through January 1 – The cottages of Holiday Village in Brownsville will be on display. The display features 34 fully decorated cottages at Dean Porter Park. Admission is free all day every day, and the cottages are lit at 6 p.m. each evening. Santa Claus will be in the gazebo and available for free pictures every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night through December 23. Now through January 1 – Hidalgo hosts their Festival of Lights. The hours of operation are 6 to 10 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and Sunday, and 6 to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. December 20 – Join the Valley Voices Choir as they perform The Glory of Christmas, Celebrating Christ’s Birth, at their 10th annual Christmas Concert. January 12 – The Senior Ambassadors will welcome the Texas A&M Singing Cadets to the Rio Grande Valley for a performance at the Center Church (formerly Trinity Worship Center), located at 4801 N. Cage Blvd., in Pharr. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the performance will start at 7 p.m. Seating is general admission and the cost for a ticket is a modest $12. Monies raised from the concert will go toward two university scholarships. Tickets can be purchased at Valley Keyboard, 900 Harvey, McAllen or at Coffee Zone Bistro, 1108 McColl Rd. in Edinburg and Coffee Zone Bistro, 701 E. Reunions are a great time to catch up with friends, old and new. Here we will feature reunions and meetings that are happening throughout the Valley. We hope that if you are having such a meeting, you will send the information to us so we can help you spread the word.

Right now, there are several meetings already taking place. Red Hatters are getting together on at least a monthly basis. If you would like to share your information, please send it in. If you have a great photo from your reunion or meeting, we would love to see that too.

Senior Slow Pitch Softball

The Senior Slow Pitch Softball group has started practicing. You must be 55 years young and over. They practice at the sports park on Ware and I2, across from the Convention Center. All games are in the morning on Tuesday and Thursday or Monday and Wednesday depending on what group you are in. There will be gloves and bats to use. Ladies welcome. December 10 – The Retama Village at Bentsen Palm will be hosting their annual Art and Craft Bazaar which includes a huge bake sale. Proceeds from the bake sale will benefit the Women’s Shelter. Expect to see stained glass, leather goods, handmade jewelry, woodturning items, quilts, Swedish weaving items, and much more. The event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. inside the clubhouse at 2204 Seagull Lane in Mission.

November 29, 2023 - Reunions and Meetings

Reunions are a great time to catch up with friends, old and new. Here we will feature reunions and meetings that are happening throughout the Valley. We hope that if you are having such a meeting, you will send the information to us so we can help you spread the word.

Right now, there are several meetings already taking place. Red Hatters are getting together on at least a monthly basis. If you would like to share your information, please send it in. If you have a great photo from your reunion or meeting, we would love to see that too.

RGV Woodcarvers
