Quinta Mazatlán World Birding Center is honored to host author and Texas historian W.F. Strong on Thursday, January 13th from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a special discussion on birds of prey and reading/book signing of his most recent publication Stories from Texas, Some of Them are True, Vol. II on the Nature Speaker Series at Quinta Mazatlán. Book sale and book signing available following program. Tickets are $5 per person. Pre-purchased tickets recommended. Tickets available for purchase at www.quintamazatlan.ticketleap.com. January 13 and 14

Ron Hoover will host their 15th Annual Open House next week, Thursday, January 13 and Friday, January 14. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days. The annual open house has become a popular event in the Rio Grande Valley, drawing in thousands of people each year. This year’s event is expected to be even bigger than previous years. All who register at the event will receive a free t-shirt, free food, free drinks, and free parking. Ron Hoover RV & Marine Center is located at 101 Expressway 83 in Donna (on the south side of the expressway). Parking will be available along North Ave. behind Ron Hoover. Golf cart shuttling will be provided both days.

January 14 and 15

RGV Woodcarvers Show will be held at the Nomad Shrine Club (1044 W. Nolana Blvd., Pharr). There will be carvings of just about every carving category on display. Many displayers will have carvings and supplies available for sale. Look at the full story in this issue

January 15

The City of Mercedes will host their Queen City Market Days located in historical downtown Mercedes from 4 to 9 p.m. The event will be held every third Saturday of the month from November through January.

Get the scoop on why soil is vital to life at the International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) January 15 and 16. The Soil Science Expo at IMAS is a weekend-long event celebrating the ground under our feet with virtual programs occurring Saturday, January 15, and a community day on-site Sunday, January 16 from 1-5 p.m. The event will feature hands-on art and science activities and opportunities for visitors to engage with civil engineers and soil scientists. Participating organizations include For the Love of Soil, McAllen Public Utility, Rodriguez Engineering Laboratories, LLC, Texas A&M University, and University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Earth, Environment, and Marine Sciences.

ALCOA/Arconic Retirees

Newmar Owner’s Monthly Luncheon

The Newmar Owner’s Monthly Luncheon will meet at the American Legion on the Second Wednesday of the month through March. It will be held January 12 at 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost for lunch is $13 per person. This is for all Newmar owner’s past and present. Guests are welcome to attend. National Rural Letter Carriers

The National Rural Letter Carriers will be meeting at Ann’s Restaurant on Wednesday, January 19. The meeting will start with registration at 9 a.m., with the program at 9:30 a.m. Lunch will be afterwards. Attendees will be ordering off the menu. Brownsville Holiday Village will be on display at Dean Porter Park. Houses will be lit up at 6 p.m. every night. McAllen will have their South Pole of Texas illuminated. There will be different events of entertainment, food, and more each weekend in December. The event is at the McAllen Convention Center Oval Park.

The City of Edinburg will have their light displays available for self-guided tours at the Promenade that extends from University Drive near 4th Street all the way to 9th Street and around the Edinburg Food Truck Park (Promenade Courtyard) and the Edinburg City Hall. Enjoy the lights all month long with friends and family.

January 8, 2022

Beginner and intermediate artists are invited to take part in an art workshop with Cybelle Arts from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at IMAS. A limited number of spots are available. Participants will create a fluid art painting on 11x14” canvas. Painting pickup is the following Sunday to allow for sufficient dry time. A mask is required for all participants. SPI will have their Holiday Light Show with synchronized festive music that is played in 15-minute intervals, daily from 6 to 9 p.m. at the SPI Convention Center.

Through January 22, 2022

The Brownsville-SPI International Airport will host the photography exhibit “Women in Aviation and Space History.” This exhibit celebrates the accomplishments by women since the early days of aviation, to space exploration to recent commercial space flights. It consists of 35 images and is a project organized in collaboration with the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, and others. Exhibit will be on display on the second floor of the airport. It is located at 700 Amelia Earhart Dr., in Brownsville.

January 20, 2022

Alfresco Weslaco will be held 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. in historic downtown Weslaco. Free admission. The heart and soul of the community is in Downtown and Weslaco wants to share it with you by providing music and art. Bring your lawn chairs and dancing shoes. The Rio Grande Valley Woodcarvers have begun their 2021-2022 season. The woodcarvers are meeting again this year at the Nomad Shrine Club, 1044 W. Nolana Blvd., in Pharr. Join the group from 8 a.m. until noon every Thursday through March of 2022. Gather with old friends, and new, to carve, visit and share ideas. Please use the north end of the parking lot for parking. Also, please use the back door to enter the building. Participants will be setting up their own tables for the time being. Be sure to clean up your area before leaving at the end of the day.

Hidalgo Festival of Lights celebrates 30 years with a drive-thru event at the Payne Arena. Admission must be purchased online prior to event. Event will be held 6 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and to 11 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
