An exhibition of photographs by members of the Upper Valley Art League is open for viewing at the Kika de la Garza Fine Arts Center Gallery. This year’s exhibition showcases various styles of photography ranging from traditional, digital, and mobile created by UVAL members. The exhibition will be available for viewing through April 3. All visitors must wear a mask and maintain social distancing while in the gallery. The event is free and the public is welcomed to attend. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Caring Senior Service. To mark this milestone, the CEO and founder of Caring, Jeff Salter, is riding an electric bike over 9,000 miles to visit every Caring location and to raise awareness about underserved aspects in senior care. There will be a Facebook livestream at 10:30 a.m. on Facebook – Caring Senior Service of McAllen. Salter will be departing from McAllen at 12:30 p.m., corner of Fern and Jackson. Speer Memorial Library in Mission invites you to join us on Tuesday, April 6, for a discussion of the book The Joy Luck Club, to take place via Zoom at 5:30 p.m. in Spanish, and at 6:30 p.m. in English. A link will be sent for this virtual meeting to all who sign up. Free books will be available while supplies last for those that sign up. Written by Amy Tan, and first published in 1989, The Joy Luck Club is a story of the deep bonds between mothers and daughters, entwined with the complexities of the past, and of how one’s culture and past cannot be so easily left behind. IMAS will be hosting an at-home Printmaking Workshop at 2 p.m. Learn basic carving and printmaking techniques with everyday tools. Kit includes air-dry clay, rolling pin, plastic knife, toothpick, a tray, paper, pencil, ink, and a paintbrush. Kit pichup is Saturday, April 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 5 p.m. via curbside at the museum. The Valley Symphony Orchestra will have the 2021 gala event, BRAVO! VSO on May 7 at the McAllen Performing Arts Center. The event will raise funds for its performance and education initiatives and will provide guests with an excellent evening of music and celebration. The musical program for BRAVO! VSO will feature Pasión Primavera, a one-night-only command performance by the VSO Strings Orchestra. The artists will perform a sultry program of Latin music selections, including “Besame Mucho,” “Libertango,” “Cinema Paradiso,” a pop arrangement of “Santana In Concert” and more. The evening will also feature an online auction of luxury items, an inventive socially-distanced dinner, and a virtual attendance option. Special preparations are being made to hold the event in accordance with the available public-health guidelines. Tables and tickets to the gala can be purchased by calling the VSO office at (956) 661-1615 or emailing katy.coy@valleyorchestra.org. The site is the permanent location of Jitterz coffee bar and local brewery 5x5 Brewing Co., which will be operating during the food park hours. The food park will host a variety of food trucks including Queenie, Motoramen, Sahadi’s, and Pineapple Ninjaz. Quinta Mazatlán is hosting presenter Sandra Villegas on Thursday, March 25, starting at 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on The Back Porch at Quinta Mazatlán. Villegas will demonstrate and prepare two recipes using the native plants prickly pear and mesquite flour as well as discuss the benefits of eating and using native plants, how to start a small container garden, what the best herbs are to start with, and how healthy lifestyles overall are the foundations to a healthy self. Attendees will get to sample the foods being made and will get to leave with the recipes. Mesquite Flour will be available and on sale. The Museum of South Texas History welcomes Martin Salinas for his bilingual presentation, “Entorno, arqueología y el primer poblamiento del bajo Río Grande o Bravo,” at 2 p.m. on March 28 on Facebook Live. This presentation will feature the details on the physiographic and environmental changes of South Texas and northeastern Mexico in the last millenia, and the first peoples’ adaptations to the environment as understood through archaeological work. The presentation will broadcast at facebook.com/MOSTHistory/live. Viewers are encouraged to interact with panelists by posting comments and questions on the live feed. The presentation will also be recorded and posted for public access on the museum’s website at mosthistory.org.

Quinta Mazatlán is celebrating Irish Heritage Month by hosting Champion Irish Dancer and Director of McAllen Irish Arts, Angelika Eleni Ruiz on Thursday, March 18th, 2021 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on The Back Porch at Quinta Mazatlán—located at 600 Sunset Drive. Angelika will discuss the history of Irish dancing, the different styles of dance, and will conclude with a cultural dance lesson. In this series Vityk investigates the narrative elements and figures of ancient rock engravings and mythological and folk symbols. The exhibit is comprised of 12 large acrylic paintings. The B League (intermediate ability) will be meeting on Mondays and Wednesdays. The A League (more competitive) will be meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays. UTRGV Patron of the Arts presents a Cold War Recital. Join them for a performance of Dr. Kenneth Saxon’s Cold War Recital. The program is built around the Second Piano Sonata of Shostakovich and Aaron Copland’s Piano Variations and includes music by Mozart, Rachmaninoff, and a newly commissioned work by Kawai Shiu. The music is infused with poetry and texts that bring into vivid relief the voices of composers living in the shadow cast by the Super Powers.
