Winter Texans from Ringgold County and surrounding communities and counties are invited to a gathering at Ann's Restaurant in San Juan on February 5th at 11:30 a.m. Social distancing and the wearing of masks are encouraged for the safety of those attending. The Rio Grande Valley Woodcarvers will not be holding their Thursday morning carving meetings until further notice. The Nomad Shrine Club is being used for Covid19 testing.  January 14

McAllen VA Clinic will be hosting a drive-thru produce pantry for Veterans this Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m., or while supplies last. The VA Texas valley Coastal Bend Health Care System is partnering with the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley to provide free fruits and vegetables to Veterans. Veterans must present a valid VA identification card to confirm their Veteran status. Every Thursday from September through May, Quinta Mazatlan holds their Nature Speaker Series. The topic will be Endangered and Threatened Plant Species of the Rio Grande Valley presented by local plant expert Benito Trevino. The Speaker Series is held from 6 to 7 p.m. and fee is $3. The Holiday Sandcastle Village and Light Show on South Padre Island will be available to walk through. The village features unique holiday-themed sculptures created by sand artists from around the world. The light show is located directly in front of the entrance to the village. Social distancing is required. The sculptures are on view and open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. It even features a large sand chair you can sit in for a photo opportunity. The light show runs from 6 to 9 p.m. The Village is located near Louie’s backyard and Gravity Park. Look for the Ferris Wheel.

January 20

Learn to draw with IMAS with their online workshop. Learn sketching techniques as they demonstrate how to quickly draw images from real life. The program is recommended for ages 12 and up. The Workshop will be held online on Wednesday, January 20 from 3 to 4 p.m. Visit theimasonline.org and go to the Explore tab to register. Kit pickup is every Saturday prior to workshop from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 5 p.m. This kit includes a sketchbook, sketching pencil set, and sharpener all in a travel case.

Most of the trees taken to the center will be turned into mulch. Some will be used to help with dune preservation on the island. IMAS presents Max Vityk’s Warriors of Light on exhibit in the main gallery. In this series Vityk investigates the narrative elements and figures of ancient rock engravings and mythological and folk symbols. The exhibit is comprised of 12 large acrylic paintings. The Mission Food Park will be open weekly Thursday through Sunday. Thursday will be from 4 to 10 p.m., Friday 4 p.m. to 12 a.m., Saturday 2 p.m. to 12 a.m. and Sundays will be open from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Mission Food Park, powered by the Mission EDC, is located at the CEED building on Bryan Road and U.S. Business 83. The site is the permanent location of Jitterz coffee bar and local brewery 5x5 Brewing Co., which will be operating during the food park hours. The food park will host a variety of food trucks including Queenie, Motoramen, Sahadi’s, and Pineapple Ninjaz. The Senior Texas Slow Pitch Fun Softball League, geared for players over 55, will be meeting weekly at 9 a.m. at West Side Park on Ware Road in McAllen. The B League (intermediate ability) will be meeting on Mondays and Wednesdays. The A League (more competitive) will be meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The last day of Festival of Lights “Season of Hope” will feature a two-mile drive-through attraction with millions of lights, castles, tunnels and hundreds of illuminated displays. Tickets start at $20 per vehicle, plus applicable fees, and include a four-pack of 20 oz. Coca Cola. Guests can purchase a Dash Pass for $40 and skip the lines. It is being held at Payne Arena in Hidalgo. Tickets are available for purchase at www.hidalgofestivaloflights.com.

Brownsville’s Holiday Village will premiere their Virtual Village that will be accessible anytime and anywhere. The village will include 31 cottages for visitors to explore. They will also have coloring pages, games and other activities. And, as always, Fritter will arrive on Thanksgiving night and hide in a different cottage each day. The Virtual Village will be updated throughout the holiday season, so be sure to visit the page often. Raul Longoria Rd., and will be transformed into a drive-thru wonderland with thousands of twinkling lights on display from 6 to 10 p.m. The event is free and covers a mile of themed entertainment. The Pharr Community Theater will present the popular Charles Dickens adaptation, A Tejano Christmas Carol, on their Facebook page. The two-act play will be screened live and free of charge.
