The Rio Grande Valley Woodcarvers will not be holding their Thursday morning carving meetings until further notice. The Nomad Shrine Club is being used for Covid19 testing. Newmar Kountry Klub Luncheon

February 5

Premiering on February 5 at 7 p.m. on YouTube will be a recital with the students and faculty of the Flute Studio presented by UTRGV Patron of the Arts. Under the direction of Dr. Krista Jobson, this recital celebrates the work of the members of the flute studio and provides experience for the students in preparation for their full recitals, auditions, competitions, and juries.

Now through February 6

Through February 6, the City of South Padre Island will be doing Christmas tree recycling from 8 to 11 a.m. at the community center. This will be going on until February 6. Most of the trees taken to the center will be turned into mulch. Some will be used to help with dune preservation on the island. The SPI Community Center is located at 4501 Padre Blvd. For more information, call (956) 761-8168.

Wild Bees, an exhibition showcasing the works of Paula Sharp and Ross Eatman, is on display at IMAS. The IMAS galleries are open weekly Wednesday through Saturday with modified hours and scheduled admission tickets. Currently admission is $1 for guests four and up, and IMAS members and children under 4 receive free admission. Visit theimasonline.org for the most up to date visitor information.

IMAS presents Max Vityk’s Warriors of Light on exhibit in the main gallery. In this series Vityk investigates the narrative elements and figures of ancient rock engravings and mythological and folk symbols. The exhibit is comprised of 12 large acrylic paintings. February 12 through March 6

The Hidalgo Watercolor Society Annual Exhibit will open February 12 and run through March 6. The exhibit will be displayed at the Upper Valley Art League (UVAL) at 921 E. 12th St. in Mission. The exhibit features art made by Winter Texans and local artists. A “Meet the Artists” event will be held on Saturday, February 13th, outside, with gallery viewing from 4 to 6 p.m. Gallery hours are Thursdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Masks and social distancing are required for all events. Weekly

The Mission Food Park will be open weekly Thursday through Sunday. Thursday will be from 4 to 10 p.m., Friday 4 p.m. to 12 a.m., Saturday 2 p.m. to 12 a.m. and Sundays will be open from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Mission Food Park, powered by the Mission EDC, is located at the CEED building on Bryan Road and U.S. Business 83. The site is the permanent location of Jitterz coffee bar and local brewery 5x5 Brewing Co., which will be operating during the food park hours. The food park will host a variety of food trucks including Queenie, Motoramen, Sahadi’s, and Pineapple Ninjaz. Hours and regular updates of vendors will be on their Facebook page, www.facebook.com/MissionFoodPark, and website, www.missionfoodpark.com/.

The Senior Texas Slow Pitch Fun Softball League, geared for players over 55, will be meeting weekly at 9 a.m. at West Side Park on Ware Road in McAllen. The B League (intermediate ability) will be meeting on Mondays and Wednesdays. The A League (more competitive) will be meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Texas Citrus Fiesta Parade Cancelled

The Texas Citrus Parade that was scheduled for January 30th has been cancelled until further notice. Texas Citrus Fiesta will let us know when the parade will be scheduled. 

January 28

Texas Citrus Fiesta’s Coronation of King Citrus and Queen Citrianna will take place on Thursday, January 28. The event recognizes the new court that will be in place for next year’s event. Mission Historical Museum will host their 15th Annual Mission Quilt Show online this year. The exhibit opened on Monday, January 18 and is available for viewing until January 29th. Everyone can access the virtual exhibit by going to www.missionmuseum.org. Because the show will be held virtually, there will only be three awards. The awards will be first, second and third place Viewer’s Choice. Viewers are encouraged to vote by emailing their quilt of choice to missionmuseum@gmail.com. Voting will run through February 5th. Only one vote is allowed per email. Winner will be contacted by February 9th. Viewer’s Choice first place will receive a Mission Historical Museum gift basket.

January 20, 2021 - Events Calendar

January 20

Learn to draw with IMAS with their online workshop. Learn sketching techniques as they demonstrate how to quickly draw images from real life. The program is recommended for ages 12 and up. The Workshop will be held online on Wednesday, January 20 from 3 to 4 p.m. Visit theimasonline.org and go to the Explore tab to register. Kit pickup is every Saturday prior to workshop from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 5 p.m. This kit includes a sketchbook, sketching pencil set, and sharpener all in a travel case.

January 23

Center for Urban Ecology is hosting the first Hobbies in Nature session of 2021, “Begin to Birdwatch”. The one-hour program invites guests into the world of birds, where they will be amazed by the beautiful colors, fascinating behaviors, and incredible diversity of birds found all around us. After a fun-filled introduction, guests will be introduced to the tips and tricks of birdwatching, from how to use binoculars to practicing bird identification using the 5 Keys of Bird ID. Come fly by Quinta Mazatlan and get birdy on Saturday, January 23, from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. for birdwatching fun. The Hobbies in Nature series is designed for adults and older youth, $5 per person. Texas Citrus Fiesta will present their Royal Reception at Balli’s Terrace Event Center. The Royal Reception features duchesses dressed in gowns representing their city or an agricultural product. This is an opportunity for the ladies to show their poise and walk the runway in their beautiful dresses before the coronation event the following week. The event will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. Tickets are $50. The cap of the Texas Citrus Fiesta celebration is the Parade of Oranges. The parade will be at 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 30. Floats will line up at FM 495 and travel south down Conway Ave. to 1st St. The parade will feature floats, bands, and others showing off their citrus pride. Floats are decorated with citrus or an agriculture product to showcase the Valley. COVID-19 regulations and practices will be in place.
