September 30-October 9 – Pharr Community Theater presents Salt and Pepper. Showing will be at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 3 p.m. on Sundays. Salt's grandfather can't read or write. He's ashamed to tell anyone, and his silence has had a devastating effect on the entire family. Border St., will host Native Plant Project’s guest speaker John Brush, Urban Ecologist for the City of McAllen, at 7:30 p.m. The title of John's presentation is "Native Plants for Wildlife." His program will include an introduction to native plants of the Rio Grande Valley, provide recommendations on how to choose the plants for your space, and explore the relationships between the native plants and local wildlife. Brush spends most of his time at Quinta Mazatlan Word Birding Center of McAllen where he oversees rewilding/restoration projects, develops community partnerships, gives educational programs, and serves as a park naturalist. July 1 – The City of Brownsville will be bringing back the long-awaited First Friday celebration at Market Square in their Historic Downtown. This event will be held every first Friday of every month, starting this July. With family-friendly activities beginning from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and nightlife from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. with participation from local bars, vendors, restaurants, and outside entertainment.

July 2 – Celebrate Independence Day with the City of San Benito at ResacaFest. The event will feature food vendors, arts and crafts, live music, and fireworks show. There will also be a car show and hot dog and pie eating contests. Festivities kick off at 4 p.m. at Heavin Memorial Park, 705 N. Bowie St. Admission is free. Live music begins at 4:30 p.m. The event ends at 11 p.m.

July 2 – City of Edinburg will hold their Texas Cook’Em Festival. The event will begin at 10 a.m. at Ebony Hills Golf Course, 300 W. Mark S. Pena Drive. There will be live entertainment, a BBQ contest, car show, and food. Additional information can be found at www.edinburg.com.

July 3 – Cameron County Amphitheater and Event Center will present Fireworks at the Park at midnight. It is located at 53550 Dolphin Cove, South Padre Island.

July 4 – The City of South Padre Island will host their 4th of July Walking Beach Parade with the line up starting at Beach Access #21, finishing at Beach Access #17. Lineup begins at 9 a.m. There will be watermelon, water and giveaways while supplies last.

July 4 – The City of South Padre Island will continue their Fourth of July celebration with an extended fireworks show. The Show will begin at 9:15 p.m. and launch from a barge on the Laguna Madre Bay. The best viewing spot for the bayside shows in the Entertainment District, home to several bayside restaurants, and at “The Green,” a spacious lawn where people can bring their chairs to view the display. As a reminder, Bayside fireworks take place on Tuesday and Friday evenings at Louie’s Backyard. The Island also features a show of beachside firework displays every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evening. The Thursday shows begin at 9:15 p.m. at Isla Grand Beach Resort on the beach. Clayton's Beach Bar hosts "Fireworks on the Pier" on Friday and Saturday at 9:00 p.m.; and is best viewed from Clayton's, the La Quinta Inn & Suites deck, Courtyard Marriott, and the Hilton Garden Inn beach deck. July 4 – The City of McAllen will hold their 94th Independence Day Celebration with an early morning patriotic program (8 a.m.), immediately followed by the Main Street Parade and the Freedom Festival at Archer Park. Music, food, and games will be highlights of the events. The parade kicks off at 9 a.m. Activities at Archer Park, 101 N. Main St., will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Festivities will move to Municipal Park, 1921 N. Bicentennial Blvd., starting at 6 p.m. Fireworks will start at 9 p.m. from Municipal Park. The fireworks will be set to patriotic music that attendees can listen to at 710-AM KURV.

July 5 – A new temporary exhibit titled “Borderlands – An Illustrated History by Jose Cisneros” will open in the Cell Block Gallery in the 1910 Jail at the Museum of South Texas History. The exhibit features a series of works that follow the historical timeline of the Rio Grande Valley. The exhibit will be available for viewing through April 30, 2023. July 9 – Looking to beat the heat inside while giving back to the community? La Plaza Mall invites guests to let their artistic side run wild at the Paint Party benefitting the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley. On Saturday, July 9th from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. visitors can get their creative juices flowing while supplying the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley with bowls for their annual Empty Bowls fundraiser. July 10 – The Museum of South Texas History welcomes Lawrence Eugene Fernandez as a guest speaker during the Sunday Speaker Series presentation, “Jackass Flats: Tales of the Deltaland of the Rio Grande,” at 2 p.m. Fernandez will discuss why it was important to preserve the stories about regional families and historical events. His independently published book is a collection of Rio Grande Valley word-of-mouth historical accounts as told by family members, friends and community leaders. Fernandez has a family lineage from those who settled in Camargo in 1746, and from the original 300 of Stephen F. Austin’s colony. The museum is located in Edinburg at 200 N. Closner Blvd.

July 20 – Harlingen VA hosts blood drive to restocak critically low community suuply from 9 a.m. to noon. It will be held at the Harlingen VA Outpatient Clinic, 2106 Treasure Hills Blvd. Participants are asked to bring a photo ID. It is free and open to the public. The Valley International Airport in Harlingen and the Consulate of Mexico in Brownsville, in collaboration with the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum are celebrating Women’s History Month by showcasing a photography exhibit titled, “Women in Aviation and Space History.” The exhibit consists of 35 images from the 1900’s to present day of extraordinary female pilots who were pioneers in the industry through their participation and contributions in early flight, Golden Age of Flight, World War II, and the Space Race. The exhibit is free and available to all passengers and will be on display at the airport.

April 1, 2

The McAllen Art Walk will kick-off the Irish Fest at the McAllen Incubator, located at 601 N. Main St., premiering the gallery exhibit for the month of April. The exhibit is a multimedia and interactive art experience created by a team of Rio Grande Valley artists in all types of mediums. The exhibit titled “This Dark Land,” explores the myth and folklore of the Celtic Isles, drawing from the Irish landscapes and its dark mythologies. The next day the South Texas Irish Festival will be held from 12 to 7 p.m. with art exhibits, music workshops, games, and storytelling. Green lemonade and food will also be available. The Museum of South Texas History (MOSTH) will host the Sunday Speaker Series presentation, “Preserving Culture with Native Plants,” featuring Manuel Sabino, grounds and landscaping manager, at 2 p.m. The presentation and tour will highlight native plants in Will Looney Legacy Park and throughout the museum grounds. Guests will see plants firsthand and learn their names, regional history and common herbal and medicinal uses. Sunday Speaker Series programming is included in the fee for regular museum admission.

Speer Memorial Library will host a book discussion on The Great Quake, in the library’s community room at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend and discuss the book. The Great Quake is a tale of the fury of nature, the story of how an earthquake upended the lives of individuals and communities – and how it left an indelible mark on science itself. McAllen’s Sunset Live outdoor music festival returns with a Tex-Mex Country R&B musical celebration on Saturday, April 9, at the McAllen Convention Center Oval Park, 700 Convention Center Blvd. This will be the 43rd concert for Sunset Live, making it the leader in outdoor live music events in the Rio Grande Valley. Future dates will be held on May 14 and June 11. The first concert will begin with a yoga class led by Quiet Mind Yoga at 6 p.m. Taking the stage at 6:30 will be STAARZ (R&B Pop), 7 p.m. Lizzie Astorga (Mexican and American Pop), 8 p.m. Ricky J and Desert Bloom (Country), and 9 p.m. will be Darius Jackson (Blues).

The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) will be exhibiting Michelle Stitzlein’s large-scale sculpture exhibition created entirely from recycled materials in a large studio converted from a former grange hall in Baltimore, Ohio. “Industrial Nature” will be exhibited at IMAS in the Cardenas and Main Galleries through August 21, 2022. “2022: Visions of Beauty” is the theme of the annual Harlingen Flower Show, 1 to 4:30 p.m., March 26 and 27, at Harlingen Cultural Arts Center. Masonic Winter Texan Reunion

For over 40 years, MN Masons have been spending their winters in South Texas and gathering with their fellow Masons from all over the country. The 41^st Annual MN/TX Masonic Reunion will be held on Saturday, March 5, at the Rio Grande Valley Shrine Club, 13415 E Expressway 83 in LaFeria.
