Leslie Blasing sings at fundraiser in Alice

Leslie Blasing, a Valley favorite, will be performing at a Habitat for Humanity fundraiser in Alice on Monday, January 13. The event will be from 6 to 9 p.m. with Leslie performing at 7 p.m.
Leslie Blasing’s songs span seven decades of country, classic rock, 50’s and 60’s. South Padre Island has been her home for 25 years where she has won multiple awards throughout the Rio Grande Valley and was honored as the first “Lifetime Achievement Award” winner in 2018 by the Valley Star Awards.
The Museum of South Texas History will host Aurelio Manuel Montemayor and Thomas Ray García during the Sunday Speaker Series presentation, “How a South Texas educator transformed the Chicano movement,” at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 14.
Local Veterans Affair offices will be holding drive-thru food panties. On Thursday, January 18, there will be a drive-thru pantry at the McAllen VA Clinic from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. or while supplies last. The Clinic is located at 901 E. Hackberry Ave.
At Greengate Grove, the country/gospel jam takes place in the recreational hall each Saturday from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. It is managed by George Bowers, who with his wife, live full time at Greengate Grove. George also performs with his vocals and guitar at the jams. Prior to the start of each jam, a delicious meal is served at a modest price. Halfway through the jam, the residents provide home baked cookies and cakes. The jam is a success thanks to George and residents like Katie Gallaway who greet each jammer and visitor personally while also helping to prepare and serve the food, treats, or handling the 50/50 sales.
