Perhaps one of the more interesting museums in the Rio Grande Valley – and mind you, many of the museums in the Valley have a lot of history and are interesting as well – is the Museum of South Texas History in Edinburg. Part of the museum is the 1910 jail.
The old jail was designed in a Spanish Mission Revival style in 1909-1910. It was built along with the Hidalgo County Courthouse, which stood in the County Square nearby. The jail’s walls were made of solid brick, its floors were concrete, and the roof was made of clay tiles on wooden structures.

Winter Texans tend to enjoy what children are about doing in the Valley, whether it be dancing, presenting a concert, working on a civic project to better a community, giving time to help someone or marking a special achievement.
Olivia Flores, an eighth grader at Austin Middle School in San Juan, is one of those high achievers as a cadet member of Girl Scout Troop 3000. She has been in Girl Scouts for the past nine years and during that time earned all the scout badges offered. The lower half of the back of her vest contains all of the badges of a remarkable career in scouting.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I hope you have a pleasant one with your family and friends. As we all know, especially here in Texas, our friends become family, especially during the holidays.
For us, our family is spread in many directions, so it’s often that we celebrate Thanksgiving with our close friends. We truly are truly thankful for them, and our families, when we can get together. The holidays just make those moments all the merrier.
When I think of Thanksgiving, I think of the past and getting together with my grandparents on the farm. Having fresh veggies and fruit, my aunt’s Italian crème cake, and other goodies. My go to was always my grandfather’s wonderful citrus salad. I usually try to have a citrus salad for both Thanksgiving and Christmas.
I fix my salad just a little different nowadays and I take shortcuts in sectioning the citrus as well. My grandfather would spend all morning working on his – peeling the fruit and then getting the membrane off the citrus. Today, I cut the tops and bottoms off the citrus, round the sides, and then use a small sharp knife to pull out the citrus. I try to waste as little of the fruit as possible.
