Winter Texans share fashion at style show

The fashionistas of Winter Texans gathered in one place last week to enjoy fashion, food and camaraderie.
A full house saw that bell bottoms never went out of style, that western wear can be casual, formal and anything in between and that bright colors and leopard print clothing are just as in style today as they ever were at the 23rd annual Summer Time Fun Style Show at Victoria Palms.
Four local stores – Boot's 'n Jeans, Jewels by Jazz, Lionel's Western Wear and Wells of Weslaco each paraded their fashions, worn by other Winter Texans, up and down the runway in the banquet room at Victoria Palms. There were bellbottoms, fancy shawls, cowboy hats and belt, and plenty of boots with bling during the two-hour event that was catered by Victoria Palms Catering.
Each of the four fashion stores described each piece that their five or six runway models were wearing, from sophisticated to creative and everything in between.
Leah Wells, of Wells of Weslaco, said that the show provided an opportunity for family-owned enterprises to not only show what they have available but also what they offer for each Winter Texan and other customers.
Activity directors were treated to a show and lunch on Monday to show how much they are appreciated for all the work they do for the Rio Grande Valley RV and MH parks. Here at the Winter Texan Times we know that without them, we wouldn’t have much of a paper. We are all so very thankful for what you do for the community.
Four groups of musicians will present a concert for the Valley on Friday, March 6, at 7 p.m. at The Center Church, located at 4801 N. Cage Boulevard in Pharr. The Sweet Adelines, Men of A-Chord, Senior Ambassadors, and the RGV Concert Band offer this combined concert. 
Alamo Rose Quilt-A-Bees will host their quilt show on March 4 from noon to 3 p.m. at 938 South Alamo Road in Alamo. An Opportunity Quilt will be given away at the end of the show.
We’ve been busy again over here at the Winter Texan Times. We tried to get out as much as possible, but there were places and people we just couldn’t get to. We almost had to place requests in a hat and pick one to go to when we could. You want us out there and we are trying our best to come and see you. Please know that we want to know everyone, but we can’t go to everything. 
President and CEO of the Gorgas Science Foundation, Lawrence “Larry” Lof, will be sharing his expertise and knowledge of the ever-changing Rio Grande River at Quinta Mazatlán’s Nights at the Mansion Speaker Series. Join Lof Thursday, February 27, at 6 p.m. as he presents, “The Rio Grande: Reflections on a Disappearing River.” 
Robert and Billie Ferguson accepted a Proclamation from the City of Mission this week in recognition of the Rio Grande Valley Activity Directors Association. The proclamation says, “We the City Council of the City of Mission proclaim March 1, 2020 as Activity Directors Appreciation Day.” The proclamation also lists why the city is thankful for the activity directors, saying they enhance and promote unity among the directors of the retirement parks of the Rio Grande valley by promoting networking, information, resources and support; the demands of the job; that residents and management realize the importance of the activity director to the atmosphere of the park; and what the activity director’s responsibilities are – organizing activities, encouraging residents to socialize, etc. Robert shared his thankfulness with the city council pointing out there are 119 active parks represented in the association and that 35 of those are in the City of Mission.
McAllen Performing arts Center will host the Tony, Grammy and Olivier Award-winning hit musical Jersey Boys, the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. The musical will be playing at the McAllen Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, March 3. 
The Valley Symphony Orchestra presents Indiana Jones and the Wild West, featuring music from Raiders of the Lost Ark and the classical Western film The Big Country, on Friday, February 28. The concert will feature Soloist and VSO Principal Trumpet Jared Broussard and be conducted by Maestro Peter Dabrowski.
