Quinta Mazatlán is celebrating Irish Heritage Month by hosting Champion Irish Dancer and Director of McAllen Irish Arts, Angelika Eleni Ruiz on Thursday, March 18th, 2021 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on The Back Porch at Quinta Mazatlán—located at 600 Sunset Drive. Angelika will discuss the history of Irish dancing, the different styles of dance, and will conclude with a cultural dance lesson. IMAS presents Max Vityk’s Warriors of Light on exhibit in the main gallery. In this series Vityk investigates the narrative elements and figures of ancient rock engravings and mythological and folk symbols. The exhibit is comprised of 12 large acrylic paintings. An exhibition of photographs by members of the Upper Valley Art League will opened on March 12, at the Kika de la Garza Fine Arts Center Gallery. This year’s exhibition showcases various styles of photography ranging from traditional, digital, and mobile created by UVAL members. The exhibition will be available for viewing through April 3. All visitors must wear a mask and maintain social distancing while in the gallery. The event is free and the public is welcomed to attend. The Valley Symphony Orchestra will have the 2021 gala event, BRAVO! VSO on May 7 at the McAllen Performing Arts Center. The event will raise funds for its performance and education initiatives and will provide guests with an excellent evening of music and celebration. The musical program for BRAVO! VSO will feature Pasión Primavera, a one-night-only command performance by the VSO Strings Orchestra. The artists will perform a sultry program of Latin music selections, including “Besame Mucho,” “Libertango,” “Cinema Paradiso,” a pop arrangement of “Santana In Concert” and more. The evening will also feature an online auction of luxury items, an inventive socially-distanced dinner, and a virtual attendance option. Special preparations are being made to hold the event in accordance with the available public-health guidelines. UTRGV Patron of the Arts presents a Cold War Recital. Join them for a performance of Dr. Kenneth Saxon’s Cold War Recital. The program is built around the Second Piano Sonata of Shostakovich and Aaron Copland’s Piano Variations and includes music by Mozart, Rachmaninoff, and a newly commissioned work by Kawai Shiu. The music is infused with poetry and texts that bring into vivid relief the voices of composers living in the shadow cast by the Super Powers. Quinta Mazatlán is hosting author Lisa Kay Adam on Thursday, March 4, 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on The Back Porch at Quinta Mazatlán. Adam has taken the whispered and fragmented words of the ancient Coahuiltecan peoples and expanded the meanings into poems and stories. Her book, xuai, will be for sale and signing for that unique gift. The book, xuai: mission-house-village-town, opens up a window of imagination into the experience of indigenous peoples who lived in the Spanish colonial missions of South Texas and northeastern Mexico. The City of Edinburg's Cultural Arts Division is proud to present a year-round series event. Starting on March 5th, 2021, The City of Edinburg will host Food Trucks N’ Tunes at McIntyre Promenade. These events will occur every first and third Friday of every month of 2021 at McIntyre Promenade (McIntyre and 7th Street). The main attraction for this event will be the variety of food trucks and the different artists/musicians that will get on the stage and perform for the public. To enhance exhibit displays and purchase needed equipment, the Friends of the City of Alamo Museum will be holding an outdoor fundraising rummage sale on Saturday, March 6, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 130 South Eighth Street. The rummage sale will include household items, furniture, some clothing and more. Donations of items are being accepted from the public. The museum is located at 130 S. 8th St.

Keep McAllen Beautiful (KMB) will be celebrating its 10th Anniversary of the Arbor Day Celebration on Saturday, March 6. The Arbor Day Celebration is a fun-filled event where participants take part in a 5K, 10K run, 25 mile or 100 kilometer bike tour. The event will be held virtually this year, which means that participants can set their own date, place, and time to get those miles in, get active and enjoy the beautiful Rio Grande Valley spring weather. RootsTech Connect — a free, global family history conference with classes, keynote speakers and virtual expo hall — will be held Feb. 25-27, 2021. For the first time in RootsTech’s 10-year history, classes will be completely virtual and offered in multiple languages. Presenters will teach from international locations. Throughout the three-day event, livestream and on-demand content will be offered to accommodate participants’ time zones. Sessions will also be available to watch on-demand after the event concludes. Live chats and question and answer sessions will allow attendees to interact with presenters, exhibitors, and other attendees. While the official events – parade, carnival, costume ball – for Charro Days have been cancelled for this year, The Sombrero Festival will be held virtually. There will be a Sombrero Festival en Casa virtual show on Saturday, February 27. The show will feature a virtual variety show that you can watch in the comfort of your own home. There are several events you can get involved in now to be part of that show. The show will be live on Facebook at 7 p.m. on Saturday February 27.

McAllen International CarFest returns to the McAllen Convention Center, 700 Convention Center Blvd., Saturday, February 27, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a Social Distance Edition and free admission. This year, due to COVID-19, CarFest is set to take place outdoors in the McAllen Convention Center’s Oval Park. Just like past years, guests will have the chance to see over 100 cars, listen to live music, shop local vendors and enjoy delicious street food. Car enthusiasts will see a mix of 55 categories ranging from classic and antique, to muscle cars, hot rods, modern and concept vehicles.

Ron Hoover will be having a Boat Expo at their RV and Marine Center, 101 Expressway 83 in Donna, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, February 27, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, February 28. The event will be free admission and drinks. There will be a full seminar schedule for both days, food vendors, games, prizes, and a flea market.

RGV Pistons and Pinups Rockabilly Rumble will be held at 5X5 Brewing from 1 to 8 p.m. There will be food trucks, no entry fee for vehicles, and it is free to the public. It will include a pinup competition and cars from the 40’s, 50’s and rat rods. Live music will be provided by Gatos Locos. Facemask and social distancing is required. 5X5 is located at 801 N. Bryan Rd. in Mission.

The Senior Texas Slow Pitch Fun Softball League, geared for players over 55, will be meeting weekly at 9 a.m. at West Side Park on Ware Road in McAllen. The B League (intermediate ability) will be meeting on Mondays and Wednesdays. The A League (more competitive) will be meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays. RGV Woodcarvers

The Rio Grande Valley Woodcarvers will not be holding their Thursday morning carving meetings until further notice. The Nomad Shrine Club is being used for Covid19 testing. Newmar Kountry Klub Luncheon
