Reunions are a great time to catch up with friends, old and new. Here we will feature reunions and meetings that are happening throughout the Valley. We hope that if you are having such a meeting, you will send the information to us so we can help you spread the word.

Right now, there are several meetings already taking place. Red Hatters get together on at least a monthly basis – and we would love to see your photos and learn about where you went. The RGV Woodcarvers get together weekly too.
I am sure there are others that are meeting up for little get-togethers here and there. If you would like to share your information, please send it in. If you have a great photo from your reunion or meeting, we would love to see that too.

RGV Woodcarvers

The RGV Woodcarvers welcomes any new and experienced carvers every Thursday at Kamova Events, 2711 S. 23rd St., McAllen, from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Any questions, call President Pam Horstman (816) 590-6521. October 29-November 2 – McAllen Public Library will host their South Texas Book Festival. This year’s theme celebrates literature art while highlighting the community’s traditions, including heritage and cultural identity. The festival features author panels, story times, book signings, special guests, food vendors, games, activities and more. Visit www.southtexasbookfestival.com for a full list of events.

October 30 – McAllen Memorial HS Mariachi will host their fall concert from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the McAllen Memorial HS Auditorium. They will be playing various types of music styles from the regions of Mexico including some “Dia de los Muertos” themed music. The auditorium is located at 101 E. Hackberry Ave., in McAllen.

October 30 – South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center and Alligator Sanctuary will host a Spooky Night from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Admission is $5 per person. October 31 – IMAS After Dark will start off with Fright Night, an adults-only Halloween celebration, from 6 to 8 p.m. Don your best costume and immerse yourself in the museum’s unique blend of art and science as you explore the interactive exhibits, dance the night away, and gaze upon sculptures in a more hauntingly fun atmosphere. November 1 – The Valley Symphony Orchestra opens their season with Music of the Greats featuring Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro Overture, K. 492, Tchaikovsky’s No. 4, and Addinsell’s Warsaw Concerto with Juan Pablo Andrade as the piano soloist. November 1-2 – UTRGV Performing Arts Complex presents Kinetic Odyssey. Kinetic Odyssey is a showcase presenting choreography and performances produced by graduating seniors. From themes of resilience and identity to moments of joy and reflection, each dance tells a story that resonates on a deeper level. It is showing at 7:30 p.m. on both days at 1201 W. University Drive, in Edinburg. General admission ranges from $5 to $15.

November 3 – The Port Isabel Antique and Flea Market will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Beulah Lee Park, on Highway 100. This is a monthly event (excluding December) featuring a wide variety of local creations, collectibles and plants. Artisans display original artwork, jewelry, items crafted from beach finds and pieces inspired by local culture. There will be antiques and collectibles including glassware, tools and other estate items.

November 4-6 – El Paseo Arts Foundation presents The Kids Left. The Dog Died. Now What. Aging gracefully is the final frontier in this musical about those facing a host of mid-life crises. Boasting a four-person cast, the show takes a humorous and heartfelt look at the day-to-day concerns of the over fifty “empty nester” crowd, including everything from retirement to divorce, AARP to dating, and plastic surgery to grand parenting. The show will be held at the South Padre Island Convention Center, 7355 Padre Blvd., from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Admission is $30.

November 5 – UTRGV Symphonic Winds performs at the UTRGV Performing Arts Complex, 1201 W. University Drive, Edinburg, at 7 p.m. General admission is $6. Join them for an exciting band performance directed by Jerianne Larson.

November 6 – The UTRGV Wind Orchestra present A Night of Percussion, UTRGV Performing Arts Complex, 1201 W. University Drive. General admission is $6. The performance features UTRGV percussion faculty Dr. Mark Ramirez and Dr. Francis Favis on Ivan Trevino’s Run to the Light. It’s a thrilling concert showcasing their outstanding percussion faculty along with a consortium premiere of Gala Flagello’s Love and Nature and world premiere of Mat Campbell’s Centerpiece.

November 7-9 – Sharyland High School’s Carpe Diem Players present the beloved musical Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim – a mashup of classic fairy tales woven together into a captivating and imaginative story. October 24 – Quinta Mazatlan will celebrate the Rio Grande Valley’s native plants from 6 to 9 p.m. The event features a live panel discussion, native plant sale, giveaways, food, a marketplace and more. The evening includes a free shuttle service to take guests from off-site parking at 1400 Wichita near La Plaza Mall to Quinta Mazatlan. October 24 – The City of Edinburg will host a Halloween-themed fall festival at 6 p.m. at 714 S. Raul Longoria Rd. Highlights include costume contests, games and rides, food and treats, trunk or treat, and lots of fun. Edinburg Municipal Park will transform into a Halloween wonderland for the event.

October 26 – The Texas Butterfly Festival will host their free community day event at the National Butterfly Center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The center is located at 3333 Butterfly Drive in Mission. October 26 – The 54th Annual Dakee Si Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas Fall Powwow will be held at the Alton Recreation Center, 349 Dawes Ave., in Alton. Doors open at 10 a.m. and close at 9:30 p.m. There will be special dances, performances, cake walks, raffles, Indian food, arts crafts and more.

Activities will spread from the Museum of South Texas History to Edinburg City Hall. The event will feature a chalk art contest, music, a Catrina fashion contest, and more. October 27 – South Padre Island Birding Center will host their annual event Hallowings: A Celebration of Monarch Migration. Monarchs are unique due to their two-way migration. Visit the park and celebrate the fall migration as they travel to their winter home in Mexico. The center will feature Monarch-themed activities, butterfly garden tours, and more. Admission is free for the day. There will also be entertainment, face painting, sandcastle lessons, and more fun. The event is being held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The center is located at 6801 Padre Blvd. The birding center will also be having a quilt raffle for a chance to win a handmade, queen-sized quilt. Proceeds support the center’s fundraising efforts.

October 17 – Bentsen-RGV State Park will host Wild Wellness at 8:30 a.m. Reservations are required for this event. Call (956) 584-9156. The park is located at 2800 S. Bentsen Palm Dr., in Mission.

October 18 - Path of Marigolds, a full-length play written by Poet Laureate from Laredo, Texas, Raquel Valle-Sentíes in 2005, will be performed on Friday, October 18 at the Pharr One Center at 7:30 p.m. at 1121 E Nolana Loop, Pharr. Advance tickets are encouraged and can be purchased for $8 at www.pharrcommunitytheater.com. Tickets will only be available at the door upon availability for $12. October 19 – Witness the stunning display of chrome and horsepower as magnificent motorcycles and classic cars converge in a celebration of automative excellence on South Padre Island’s Chrome in the Sand. October 19 – The Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge will host a tree planting and environmental conservation day at their Rio Reforestation event at the Milagro Tract, 1320 Military Highway, in Pharr. Starting at 8 a.m., participants will gather to plant trees. October 24 – Quinta Mazatlan will celebrate the Rio Grande Valley’s native plants from 6 to 9 p.m. The event features a live panel discussion, native plant sale, giveaways, food, a marketplace and more. The evening includes a free shuttle service to take guests from off-site parking at 1400 Wichita near La Plaza Mall to Quinta Mazatlan. October 24 – The City of Edinburg will host a Halloween-themed fall festival at 6 p.m. at 714 S. Raul Longoria Rd. Highlights include costume contests, games and rides, food and treats, trunk or treat, and lots of fun. Edinburg Municipal Park will transform into a Halloween wonderland for the event.

October 26 – The Texas Butterfly Festival will host their free community day event at the National Butterfly Center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The center is located at 3333 Butterfly Drive in Mission. October 26 – Edinburg will host their annual Los Muertos Bailan from 5 to 11 p.m. at the Promenade Park Amphitheater. October 26 – The Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas will host the 53rd Annual Dakee Si Fall Powwow. Free admission at the Alton Recreation Center, 349 Dawes Ave. Door open at 10 a.m. and close at 9:30 p.m. Visit to experience American Indian culture, drumming, singing, and dancing. There will be raffles, cake walks, and vendors selling Indian food, arts, crafts, supplies, and wares.

October 27 – South Padre Island Birding Center will host their annual event Hallowings: A Celebration of Monarch Migration. Monarchs are unique due to their two-way migration. Visit the park and celebrate the fall migration as they travel to their winter home in Mexico. The center will feature Monarch-themed activities, butterfly garden tours, and more. Admission is free for the day. There will also be entertainment, face painting, sandcastle lessons, and more fun. The event is being held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The center is located at 6801 Padre Blvd. The birding center will also be having a quilt raffle for a chance to win a handmade, queen-sized quilt. Proceeds support the center’s fundraising efforts.
