20131005 Palmhurst Centennial Shary Mansion DY 0057 webThe City of Palmhurst played an important role in bringing visitors to the Valley, playing an integral part in what it is today. It continues to invite visitors to enjoy its scenery, history, community, and favorable climate.

One of the biggest historical aspects of Palmhurst is the John Shary Mansion. Although the John Shary Mansion is not open for public tours, no visit to the Rio Grande Valley would be complete without driving by the Shary mansion, located three-and-a-half miles North Shary Road, just down the road from the City of Palmhurst offices. The former residence of John Shary, who is credited with founding the Texas Citrus Industry, the mansion sits in the middle of acres of citrus.

Shary was also a land developer who was responsible for bringing many northern farmers to the area. He ran land expositions where farmers came on the train from the north. Shary built his mansion in 1917 to act as a showplace for what the Rio Grande Valley could be when the citrus industry took hold. The orchards surrounding the house were used to inspire those who came on the trains to buy land and help create a citrus empire. The lake beside the house was once used for swimming by those who toured the area. Across the street from the mansion is a private mausoleum where Shary and his wife are buried.

The Hidalgo Pumphouse houses machinery used to develop the local area centuries ago. Historically this site tells how this area, once undeveloped, played a major role in sustaining the life of the people who called the border region home. As visitors learn about the past, they can also enjoy the beautiful array of bird species which either call this World Birding Center site home or use it in their migration flights.

In terms of shopping, Palmhurst offers both local merchants and businesses that are recognized Nationwide. Most of the businesses are located at Three Mile and Conway, where you will find just about everything you need.
