We recently made the trip out to South Padre Island to visit Lobo Del Mar where we were greeted by a sociable staff and atmosphere. A unique thing here is that the restaurant features an outdoor area situated on a pier. On this visit, we sat inside but made sure to get a table with a view of the bay.
Once seated, our waitress informed us that they offer a Happy Hour menu from 3 to 6 p.m., there are select cocktails and draft beers, as well as appetizers for a good price. We settled on an order of buffalo bone-in wings, which had an ample amount of meat and weren’t overly spicy, still needing some time to look over the menu and decide on entrees. Whenever I go out to the island, I always opt for seafood, though Lobo Del Mar has plenty of other selections to serve a variety of palates including breakfast.
After debating over some options that were all equally appetizing, I ordered the Lobo’s Coconut Shrimp with a side of Spanish rice. My boyfriend selected the Lobo Fish Sandwich, which has options to be grilled, blackened, or the beer batter fried that he opted for.
Our food came out quickly and was satisfying start to finish, including the sides. The shrimp were sizable with a good crisp batter and were served with a sweet chili dipping sauce – a flavorful addition. I ended up having more than a few bites of my boyfriend’s food, too. His sandwich was stacked with three pieces of fried fish, with a hearty serving of fries filling the rest of the plate. The beer batter created the perfect texture – the outside breading light and airy, the fish inside soft and tender.
Eating at South Padre Island is always a treat. Being able to look out on the bay and feel a fresh breeze with the sounds of seagulls in the background makes any meal that much more enjoyable.
Every evening Lobo Del Mar offers a truly unique experience with a sunset bagpipe performance on the bay. There is live entertainment in the evenings and a gift shop, as well.
For those looking for the most complete fresh seafood experience, Lobo Del Mar offers fishing charters – one of many water activities available from their dock. When you get back with stories about the one that got away, Lobo Del Mar will cook the one that didn’t for you to enjoy right away.
Whether you’re from near or far, check out Lobo Del Mar at 204 West Palm Street on South Padre Island for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
