CANYON—To curb the risk for heat exposure to visitors, Palo Duro Canyon State Park will begin closing select trails between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. when the National Weather Service issues heat advisories for the area.
Extreme heat at Palo Duro Canyon State Park led to 47 recent rescue calls in under 48 hours. Every year, the park experiences a slew of distress calls during the hot summer months, stretching park staff and emergency services thin.
"Days when Palo Duro Canyon sees extreme heat are not only dangerous for visitors, but also our first responders from around the community,” said Joe Allen, Superintendent of Palo Duro Canyon State Park. “This change will emphasize safe recreation in the heat and reduce the demand on fire and rescue teams.”
EDINBURG, Texas — A new temporary exhibit titled “Borderlands-An Illustrated History by José Cisneros” will open in the Cell Block Gallery in the 1910 Jail at the Museum of South Texas History on Tuesday, July 5.

A Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service online learning course on butterflies is now available. The course covers butterfly biology, how to identify different species and what plants will attract them to a garden.
The cost for the course is $25, and it is available at https://tx.ag/ALLButterfly.
The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) presents an exhibition curated by UTRGV MFA Alumnae Cristina Correa and Fatima Lai presenting works by high school art students from IDEA Public Schools San Juan and Brownsville ISD’s Rivera High School. The exhibit entitled Student Crossroads: Contemplating Uncovered Spaces will be exhibited at the IMAS through July 10.

The Port Isabel is bringing back a tradition that was started in 2004 – Movies at the Lighthouse. Movies will be projected on the side of the historical Port Isabel Lighthouse. No admission fee, Concessions will be available. The lighthouse will be open until 9 p.m. for tours (tours do have an admission). Movies start at 9 p.m.

South Texas College kicks off its 14th Annual South Texas Ceramic Showdown, "The Future is Fluid. Is Function Fixed?” with a reception as well as two days of demonstrations, art talks and a month-long exhibit for the community.
The exhibit will be on view from June 6 to July 1, at the college's STC Pecan Campus Art Gallery. The gallery and ceramic studio are located at 3201 West Pecan Blvd., Building B in McAllen.
