20190102 Helen Russell promo12The 2018 winner of the Valley Star Awards “Best Small Band Variety Show,” Helen Russell and Company, is in demand with a very full schedule of shows at the RV resorts in the Rio Grande Valley this season.

From country to bluegrass to classic rock to gospel, Helen Russell said she strives to make sure the audience enjoys their show. She said they pride themselves in “giving 100 percent, whether there are 50 people in the audience or 300.”

Regarding being voted “Best Small Band Variety Show” last season, Russell said, “That was only our second year and we didn't think we had a following big enough to win that award. We felt really honored, especially since we had only been here one season prior. It has been awesome. It's more and more like coming home every year.”

Russell remembers music being a part of her family ever since she was a child, when her parents would travel to entertain. They encouraged her to sing and learn to play multiple instruments starting at the age of 6.

Russell participated various bands as a teenager, until her dream of being a full-time musician came true at the age of 18 when she was offered an entertainment position with Lee Mace’s Ozark Opry, a historic, Branson-style show that ran for 53 years where she was a featured vocalist and musician for 19 seasons. It was at this show that she met her best friend and husband Elvis, who shares her love for music and entertaining and now they travel the United States as Helen Russell & Company.

Their entertaining shows not only include a wide range of music, but also a little comedy and a lot of audience participation. There's also plenty of impersonations of entertainers such as Reba, Cher, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and more.
While this may be just their third year, fans who have seen their show before will be pleased to see a different show this year.

“We pride ourselves on bettering ourselves all the time and by never thinking we've got it made,” said Russell, who resides with her husband the remainder of the year in Osage Beach, Mo., when they're not traveling. “We don't do the same show from season to season because we want people to see something different. We play a lot of different music, we have a wonderful tribute to our veterans, and people will focus in on what they enjoy.

“If it wasn't for the people who come out to see us, we wouldn't get to do what we're doing. So we want to make everyone happy and have a good time. We are blessed to be here.”

Here are some of her upcoming shows, dances and music, but there’s more to come, so watch for her ads in the Winter Texan Times for the latest schedules.
