Rio Grande Valley Woodcarvers

The Rio Grande Valley Woodcarvers have begun their 2021-2022 season. The woodcarvers are meeting again this year at the Nomad Shrine Club, 1044 W. Nolana Blvd., in Pharr. Join the group from 8 a.m. until noon every Thursday through March of 2022. Gather with old friends, and new, to carve, visit and share ideas. Please use the north end of the parking lot for parking. Also, please use the back door to enter the building. Participants will be setting up their own tables for the time being. Be sure to clean up your area before leaving at the end of the day.

The City of Edinburg and Craft Cultura are teaming up for their first Spoken Word Poetry Festival, Untamed Tongues: Poets Sin Fronteras. Join Edinburg for a night full of art and storytelling at the McIntyre Promenade Courtyard (415 W. University Dr.) at 6 p.m. Celebrate life on the borderlands as an array of poets from different regions of the Valley perform their original for the first time. Music, food, drinks, vendors and a lowrider display will also be at the event.

Fiesta de Palmas celebrates 15 years this weekend with a musical line-up that will take center stage on the McAllen Performing Arts Center stage and Sunset Stage. This year the event is celebrating and supporting local talent all across the Rio Grande Valley, making these local artists and bands the official headliners of Fiesta de Palmas. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Caring Senior Service. To mark this milestone, the CEO and founder of Caring, Jeff Salter, is riding an electric bike over 9,000 miles to visit every Caring location and to raise awareness about underserved aspects in senior care. The event will raise funds for its performance and education initiatives and will provide guests with an excellent evening of music and celebration. The musical program for BRAVO! VSO will feature Pasión Primavera, a one-night-only command performance by the VSO Strings Orchestra. The artists will perform a sultry program of Latin music selections, including “Besame Mucho,” “Libertango,” “Cinema Paradiso,” a pop arrangement of “Santana In Concert” and more. The evening will also feature an online auction of luxury items, an inventive socially-distanced dinner, and a virtual attendance option. Special preparations are being made to hold the event in accordance with the available public-health guidelines. The Mission Food Park will be open weekly Thursday through Sunday. Thursday will be from 4 to 10 p.m., Friday 4 p.m. to 12 a.m., Saturday 2 p.m. to 12 a.m. and Sundays will be open from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Mission Food Park, powered by the Mission EDC, is located at the CEED building on Bryan Road and U.S. Business 83. The site is the permanent location of Jitterz coffee bar and local brewery 5x5 Brewing Co., which will be operating during the food park hours. The food park will host a variety of food trucks including Queenie, Motoramen, Sahadi’s, and Pineapple Ninjaz. Quinta Mazatlán is hosting presenter Sandra Villegas on Thursday, March 25, starting at 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on The Back Porch at Quinta Mazatlán. Villegas will demonstrate and prepare two recipes using the native plants prickly pear and mesquite flour as well as discuss the benefits of eating and using native plants, how to start a small container garden, what the best herbs are to start with, and how healthy lifestyles overall are the foundations to a healthy self. Attendees will get to sample the foods being made and will get to leave with the recipes. Mesquite Flour will be available and on sale. The Museum of South Texas History welcomes Martin Salinas for his bilingual presentation, “Entorno, arqueología y el primer poblamiento del bajo Río Grande o Bravo,” at 2 p.m. on March 28 on Facebook Live. This presentation will feature the details on the physiographic and environmental changes of South Texas and northeastern Mexico in the last millenia, and the first peoples’ adaptations to the environment as understood through archaeological work. The presentation will broadcast at facebook.com/MOSTHistory/live. Viewers are encouraged to interact with panelists by posting comments and questions on the live feed. The presentation will also be recorded and posted for public access on the museum’s website at mosthistory.org.

Thursday will be from 4 to 10 p.m., Friday 4 p.m. to 12 a.m., Saturday 2 p.m. to 12 a.m. and Sundays will be open from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Mission Food Park, powered by the Mission EDC, is located at the CEED building on Bryan Road and U.S. Business 83. The site is the permanent location of Jitterz coffee bar and local brewery 5x5 Brewing Co., which will be operating during the food park hours. The food park will host a variety of food trucks including Queenie, Motoramen, Sahadi’s, and Pineapple Ninjaz. Hours and regular updates of vendors will be on their Facebook page, www.facebook.com/MissionFoodPark, and website, www.missionfoodpark.com/.

Every first and third Friday of the month, from 5 to 9 p.m., Edinburg will host Food Trucks N’ Tunes at McIntyre Promenade. Parking will be at city hall, 415 W. University Dr. Dogs on a leash are welcome. For more information, call (956) 383-6246 or visit www.edinburgarts.com.

RGV Woodcarvers

The Rio Grande Valley Woodcarvers will not be holding their Thursday morning carving meetings until further notice. The Nomad Shrine Club is being used for Covid19 testing. Newmar Kountry Klub Luncheon

Newmar Kountry Klub Luncheons are cancelled for this season. Any additional information, or if anything changes, will be published at a later date. The hostess, Candace Marquis, says she is looking forward to holding meetings again in 2021.
