Great weather brought out the crowd of mainly Winter Texans on opening day, Jan. 13, for the 15th annual two-day Ron Hoover RV & Marine Center open house in Donna.
Sue Stsauver, from Trails End Mobile Home and RV Park in Weslaco, came to see the grand prizes to be given away after having a dream she won a four-wheel all-terrain vehicle and had it shipped home to Minnesota.
The Museum of South Texas History kicks off the 2022 Sunday Speaker Series with a book presentation and signing featuring Robert Saldaña at 2 p.m. on Jan. 16 at MOSTH in Edinburg.
Saldaña’s book titled, “Tejano Experience: The History and Genealogy of My Maternal Grandfather’s Garza & Olivares Families in South Texas” is a case study in Spanish and Mexican American genealogy which resulted from his efforts to learn more about himself, his family and fellow Tejanos. Guests can purchase a copy of the book, while supplies last, at the Museum Store that can be signed by the author.
The Texas corridor is a huge birding spot for many and is a huge migration area for thousands of birds as they escape the colder climates for warmer weather, and then come back through in the spring and summer searching for cooler weather. This year, while we have been finding new ways to entertain ourselves, the birds still continue on their patterns.
The Valley is a hotspot to several migrating patterns and the Lower Rio Grande Valley has had a huge fallout this season. In the fall months, South Padre Island was full of color as Buntings and other birds passed through the area. Birders were flocking the area getting once in a lifetime photos to add to their collections.
The 2022 Rio Grande Valley Woodcarving Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Friday and Saturday, January 14-15, at the Nomad Shrine Club, 1044 W. Nolana in Pharr. Admission for the event is a $3 donation.
The show features exhibits by carvers, carving instructors, tool vendors, and wood vendors. Door prizes will be given every 30 minutes with three large door prizes given at the end of the show.
Stefano’s in Harlingen was hit with a tragic fire just days before Christmas. We would like to support our advertiser by inviting our readers to support them, by visiting their other location in Pharr.
According to news reports, the damage to their Harlingen location was deemed a total loss by the fire department. The restaurant has been reduced to fragments, said the news.
There are some Winter Texans at Casa del Sol that need your help. They are collecting donations to help the people affected by the tornadoes in KY. They are seeking monetary donations, although items are welcome as well. They have a semi-trailer that is loading stuff in NE to take to KY with the donated items.
There were communities that were completely destroyed - they need everything - said Lynn Clasen who is spearheading the effort. A big concern is that temperatures are dropping and these people need warm clothes and blankets - amongst other regular items.
The idea came to the duo of Emma Zamora and Jaelin Lopez last spring during their junior year at Veterans Memorial High School (VMHS). With the return of in-person instruction and the start of their senior year this year, the team has worked their idea into a community service project for their DECA organization.

If you don’t pay attention to our header on our paper each week, you wouldn’t know…. We have been publishing the Winter Texan Times since 1987. So, we are celebrating 35 years this season. What started as a bi-weekly paper by June Brann and Jim Brunson, has grown to a weekly paper during the Winter Texan season – October through March.
They saw the need 35 years ago, and the Winter Texan Times quickly became a staple in the Winter Texan community across the Valley.
Last week, the Brownsville-SPI International Airport held a ribbon cutting for the opening of a photography exhibit, “Women in Aviation and Space History.” This exhibit celebrates the accomplishments by women since the early days of aviation, to space exploration to recent commercial space flights. It consists of 35 images and will remain on display through January 22, 2022.

The Angel Tree Program, along with The Salvation Army’s iconic Red Kettle Campaign, is one of The Salvation Army’s best-known Christmas efforts. More than 100,000 children across Texas will experience the joy of opening presents on Christmas morning thanks to generous donors and the help of The Salvation Army.
“The Angel Tree program provides toys and clothing to children, seniors, and families who might be struggling to afford Christmas gifts this year. As we continue to navigate the lingering pandemic, families are still putting their lives back together and trying to make ends meet,” said Lt. Aguirre of The Salvation Army. “Angels are available for adoption by community members and businesses, who in a small way will deliver the magic and message of Christmas to those in need.”

The Mission Historical Museum will soon be accepting entries for its Sixteenth Annual Quilt Show. Entries will be accepted in three categories: Hand-quilted bed quilts, Machine-quilted bed quilts, and Wall hangings. The show is open to all quilters, both Winter Texans and year-round residents.
PHARR, TEXAS – Registration is open to join the 2022 South Texas Border Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist training class. Hidalgo, Starr and Cameron county residents, over the age of 18, and Winter Texans are welcome.
Texas Master Naturalist is a unique educational volunteer program sponsored by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Texas Sea Grant Program and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

The Museum of South Texas History welcomes Martin Salinas to present “La inmigración indígena en el bajo río Bravo o Grande,” a Sunday Speaker Series Online bilingual presentation, at 2 p.m. Dec. 5 on Facebook Live.
The presentation will cover the immigration patterns of the indigenous groups in the Rio Grande Delta. Due to different reasons, members of multiple ethnic groups of the continent immigrated to the lower part of the Rio Grande or Bravo during the second part of the 18th and 19th centuries, among which are Pames, Huastecos, Tlaxcaltecas, Tonkawas, Karankawas, Cherokees and, especially, the Comanches and Lipan Apache. The latter two ethnic groups began to prey on the lower part of the river shortly after the colonization of Nuevo Santander, on a seasonal basis. They are part of the cultural portent of the Great Plains and Prairies of the United States and Canada that emerged after the reintroduction of the horse in New Mexico in the late 16th century. The purpose of this presentation is to differentiate cultural adaptations of these ethnicities compared to that of the natives of the Rio Grande.
