McAllen CarFest a success

The 11th Annual McAllen International CarFest was held this past Saturday, February 27th, at the McAllen Convention Center. On arrival, the senses were greeted by live music that echoed through the venue and the smells of funnel cakes and spiropapas. An area was gated off with marked entry and exit points making it easy for people to navigate and walk around the circular enclosure that had multiple lines of cars, as well as various vendors selling both refreshments and handmade items. Gratefully the weather was pleasantly cloudy and breezy, making this outdoor event a comfortable one.

Lighthouse is open

PI Lighthouse The historic Port Isabel Lighthouse has reopened to the public.

Weather permitting, hours of operation will be Monday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Last ticket sold at 3:30 p.m. Tickets may only be purchased at the Keeper’s Cottage Visitors Center with a credit or debit card. COVID-19 restrictions apply.

Tours of the Lighthouse will be self-guided and will be limited to 15 minutes. Groups no larger than six persons may tour at one time. Masks required. Hand sanitizer will be available at the Lighthouse and all ticket holders are advised to sanitize their hands before and after the tour.

The park at the Lighthouse is open to the public. The Keeper’s Cottage Visitors Center/Chamber of Commerce is open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Humane Society hosts kitten shower

cat lying 600px The Humane Society of Harlingen will be hosting a drive-thru kitten shower to prepare for the upcoming kitten season on Sunday, March 7th from 9 a.m. to noon.

With kitten season just around the corner and thousands of furry bundles of joy on the way, HSH is asking for the community's help to ensure that they have all the necessary supplies to give each of them the best quality care before adoption.

Valley Star Awards Show was a hit

mustang band 600px The Valley Star Awards Show was a hit last week, even after being rescheduled due to the weather on the original date it was scheduled. Originally scheduled for the 17th, the event was held Wednesday, February 24th at Mission Bell Resort in Mission. It was a treat for all of those that attended – and the treat was not just the performers.

Mid-Valley is a perfect place to try a new golf course

20191020 RanchoViejoCourse 600px Dean Brown’s favorite golf hole in the Rio Grande Valley is No. 5 at Stuart Place Country Club in Harlingen.

Rightly so, because earlier this week the Hannah, North Dakota native registered the second hole-in-one of his 40-year golfing career on the 165-yard par-3 hole. Facing a 40 mile per hour side wind, Brown said he used his diver to knock in the gem. His other ace came in 2012 on the same course on hole No. 7.

MOSTH presents Pioneers of the City of Pharr

MOSTH Romeo Rosales Jr Pharr native Romeo Rosales Jr. will present a Sunday Speaker Series Online presentation, “Pharr: A Concise History,” at 2 p.m. on February 28 on the Museum of South Texas History’s Facebook page.

Pioneers come in many forms—sometimes as entire communities with a unique founding story. The All-America City of Pharr, which was incorporated in 1916, is a central community at the heart of the historic Rio Grande Valley. Sugarcane grower Henry Newton Pharr, who was also an engineer and manufacturer, along with his partner John C. Kelly, founded the city of Pharr for their interest in establishing a sugarcane empire.

Rosales Jr., the author of “Images of America: Pharr,” will share Pharr’s foundation and incorporation, stories on the National Guardsmen in the 1910s, agriculture history, and law and order. Copies of Rosales’ 2014 publication of “Images of America: Pharr” are available for purchase in the Museum Store.

Remembering the kindness of a stranger

Both in our mid 80’s, my wife, Betty, and I had an ‘appointment’ between 3 and 5 p.m. at the RH COVID Vaccination Clinic in Edinburg. It was a disorganized disaster. They funneled second shot people, cancelled out the day before, on to our day and opened the vaccines to a first come, first serve invitation. This left many elderly people, like us, thinking we had a time slot, waiting in freezing temperatures.
