STC Library looks at history of the Rio Grande Valley in new Civil War exhibit

The South Texas College Library Art Gallery continues its monthly spring semester series, “Parallels”, with a traveling exhibit on the Civil War and its impact on the border region.
South Texas College’s Library Art Gallery and History department proudly presents UTRGV’s CHAPS traveling exhibit “War & Peace on the Rio Grande, 1861-1867” at STC’s Mid-Valley Library, which began on April 5, and will be on view until June 30. The Mid-Valley Campus Library Art Gallery is located at 400 N. Border in Weslaco.
Author Marianne Monson is slated to speak on her book “Women of the Blue and Gray: True Civil War Stories of Mothers, Medics, Soldiers, and Spies,” on April 27 at 3 p.m., covering those diverse women who defied norms to participate in the war as abolitionists, teachers, and soldiers.

Get your golf clubs ready and come be a part of the Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce 2021 Mission Citrus Golf Classic Tournament sponsored by Cano & Sons Trucking. The golf tournament is scheduled for Friday, May 7, at the Shary Municipal Golf Club located on 2201 N. Mayberry Street in Mission. The tournament is held to benefit Mission CISD students.
It is that time of the year once again. Spring has sprung and Keep McAllen Beautiful is spring cleaning the city of McAllen. Keep McAllen Beautiful (KMB) is organizing its annual Great American Clean-Up and Don’t Mess with Texas Trash-Off, but with a different twist this year. Due to the pandemic, there will not be a mass gathering in the park; instead, KMB is asking interested individuals to gather their favorite 5-10 people and create a small group to do a litter clean-up around town.

On April 19, 1970, the “doors to the past” were opened to the 1910 Jail and the rest is history. From that momentous day on, the museum grew from a small county museum (Hidalgo County Historical Museum) to an American Alliance of Museums accredited museum (Museum of South Texas History) with state-of-the-art exhibitions set on a campus encompassing more than a city block. For 50 years, MOSTHistory has had an incredible history of its own, independent of the many stories its on-going exhibits tell. “Golden Memories: Fifty Years of Preserving the Borderland Heritage of the Rio Grande Valley” highlights some of that history and is waiting for visitors to enjoy. This exhibit will close on May 1, 2021.
The Rio Grande Valley has a lot of talented songwriters, some with published songs, some performing their originals in local shows, and some who have yet to showcase their own material. Now, 5X5 Brewing will host a series of singer/songwriter sessions, creating a unique and audience-interactive venue for artists to showcase their own original songs and the inspirations behind them.
