Weslaco residents of Ranchero Village Senior Resort Park kicked off the season of spreading holiday cheer by giving back to the local community. Due to the generous donations of the residents, Ranchero Village teams were able to deliver cash and multiple boxes of food to the RGV Food Bank while six more teams delivered gifts and food boxes to families in the community.
They also did not forget to show their gratitude for those who serve the community. The resident bakers kept their ovens hot preparing Christmas cookies and goodies for holiday treat boxes, which were delivered to the Weslaco Police Department, the Weslaco Fire/EMS Department, the Texas Army National Guard, and the U.S. Border Patrol.

A revival may be coming for those interested in square dancing.
Lessons and square dances are popping up at Winter Texan parks across the Valley. More importantly, both veterans and “newbies” are finding a keen interest in taking part.
A few couples attended recently at Mission Bell RV Park in Mission, where Robert Ferguson teaches a weekly class Friday afternoons.
Chuck Berry, not to be confused with the rock 'n roll Chuck Berry, and his wife Phyllis are part of the newbie group.

Welcome home. By now most of our Winter Residents have arrived and we are so glad to have you back in the big, wonderful state of Texas and the sunny Rio Grande Valley. If you drove down, then I am sure you were once again impressed by how big - and varied - Texas is. If you flew in - especially if you came from Canada - you were probably just a little shocked when you stepped off the plane. What a big difference it is between European Quebec and the tranquil palm lined roads of the Rio Grande Valley. It is quite a shock. From East to West and North to South, all these different areas have their own personalities. Yep, Texas is a Whole Other Country.

The 2022 Rio Grande Valley Woodcarving Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Friday and Saturday, January 14-15, at the Nomad Shrine Club, 1044 W. Nolana in Pharr. Admission for the event is a $3 donation.
The show features exhibits by carvers, carving instructors, tool vendors, and wood vendors. Door prizes will be given every 30 minutes with three large door prizes given at the end of the show.

This cooler weather has been quite welcoming. It has made it feel like winter finally. It hasn’t been too cold, or too nasty wet outside with it either. I think it has been exactly what I have needed to feel like it is the correct season. After it just being a little too warm for Christmas, I was ready for that cooler weather to bring some of the holiday spirit with it.
My thing is, I don’t want it to get much cooler than it is. The 50- and 60-degree temperatures are just right for me. Any lower and I just want to stay inside for the most part.

Stefano’s in Harlingen was hit with a tragic fire just days before Christmas. We would like to support our advertiser by inviting our readers to support them, by visiting their other location in Pharr.
According to news reports, the damage to their Harlingen location was deemed a total loss by the fire department. The restaurant has been reduced to fragments, said the news.

I can not believe the year is coming to an end. It has gone by so very fast in some cases. Other things seem to have dragged on. As we look forward to the New Year, we often think of things we can improve.
There are several traditions that many across the globe have – like making New Year’s resolutions. Others include decorating a New Year’s Tree, dressing up nice, tossing tinsel, embracing your heritage, eating New Year’s food, praying, toasting, making noise, giving a gift, the countdown to a midnight kiss, singing “Auld Lang Syne,” and sending thank you notes.

A couple of workcampers at Seven Oaks Resort in Mission have been busy this season. Their latest project has been a beautiful butterfly garden. So far, their work has paid off as seen by the abundance of butterflies, birds, and even worms that have been found in the garden.
Robin Wright and Korine Leonard carefully selected plants, bushes, and trees – with the ultimate goal of attracting the beautiful birds and butterflies that the area is known for while also providing a relaxing spot for the guests to visit and enjoy.

Winter Texans may find the new Landmark on Tower to be a “swinging” place to go for an evening of fun, food, and friendly conversation. To get into the swing of things, just sit down at one of the seven swing-seat tables in the outside court area, that has artificial turf for grass.
The food truck court, which opened Oct. 15, is the creation of Roy Landa, a property developer. He grew up in Alamo, about three blocks from his establishment, which includes his two brothers in partnership, David and Gilbert. Roy says his aim is to have a place where adults can come for the food, try some of the 20 craft beer brews and four wines on tap and have their children with them at the same time.

In just a few days, 2021 will come to an end and a new year begins. It is time to look forward to 2022, a New Year. It is time to make those New Year’s resolutions.
