Tip O Texas sewing group will have their Wedding Gowns of the Decades Style Show and Luncheon next week on Friday, February 21 from 12 to 3 p.m. The event is $8 per person and must be purchased in advance. Monies raised go to their Sewing Room Charities group.
Tip O Texas has a large endeavor with their sewing room charities organization.
On Thursday’s the group has a charity sew where they make blankets for children in different places. On the second Thursday of every month, they make comforters for Ronald McDonald patients at Edinburg Children’s Hospital. Marcia Albers from Iowa and Jackie Hood from MI are in charge of that group.

Tommie Brixey, owner of LaFloresta Park in Mercedes, reported that the first annual La Floresta Derby was held the first Saturday in February at La Floresta Downs. It drew quite a crowd as Winter Texans arrived in large, extravagant hats; had Mint Julep jello shots; and cheered as the horses “raced” by.
Excitement mounted during the weeks preceding the race, as teams were created to decorate the horses and choose a jockey. The six horses, among the best of the best, were all first-time participants at La Floresta Downs. The jockeys were Winter Texans who came from all over the United States and Canada to participate in this prestigious race in the Rio Grande Valley.

Thousands of Winter Texans look forward to the great entertainment that performs at the annual Mission Winter Texan Fiesta each year. The event is held by the Mission Chamber to say “Thank you” to the Winter Texans that make the Valley their home during the winter season. The event features a great lineup of entertainment, an artisan’s market, a free meal, and a golf tournament.
On Thursday, February 13, the Shary Municipal Golf Course will host the “Fiesta on the Greens” golf tournament. The event will be a six-person scramble 18-hole tournament. There will be prizes, food, beverages and limited spots available. Cost is $40 per person. Make reservations by calling the pro shop at (956) 580-8770. The golf course is located at 2201 Mayberry Road in Mission.

St. Baldrick’s Head Shaving Event and Raffle will be held on Saturday, February 15, at the Edinburg Center at Renaissance, 118 Paseo Del Prado. Music and raffle/silent auction will be at 10 a.m., shaving starts at 10:45 a.m. The head shaving event helps fund research into cures and better treatments for childhood cancer. Come and watch the Hair Fly.
The event was started by Winter Texans in 2009 at Texas Trails RV Park. The first seven years the event was staffed by seniors. Doctor’s Hospital joined the event in 2016 and now the event is staffed by senior volunteers and volunteers from the hospital.

Renk's final event on February 16 will honor his son Matador David Renk, "El Texano," a true icon of Matadorship in the bullfight world. David passed away September 2018. He was the sixth American Matador in history since 1902 to achieve the title, and the only one of the group to ever appear in the world's largest bullring and receive the doctorate of bullfighting.
Renk started to put on bloodless events in 1986, by leasing the Houston Astrodome, where the first of a series of world class bullfights started. From there he went with his partner Mr. Jack Woodson of Brownfield, Texas, to the Hemisphere Arena in San Antonio, then to Ft. Worth, then to the coliseum in El Paso.

The intensity was felt through the deafening silence as 19 teams competed to see who, after probably 5-6 hours of competition, would earn the rights to be named champion.
Nineteen teams of two men or two women from 10 Encore Parks took their seats across from their partners, their opponents taking the opposite chairs as the battle for Bridge dominance began Monday morning at Victoria Palms RV Park and Resort.
Bridge derived from the game “Whist” and dates back to as early at 15th century when a French author mentioned a game “La Triomphe” in one of his publications. These are the earliest known mentions of the game.

Latin dance instructor, Solenne Reyna will be sharing her passion for dance at Quinta Mazatlán Thursday, February 13 at 6 p.m. as the presenter for Nights at the Mansion. Solenne will be leading a Valentine’s Salsa Night as she teaches her “Beginners Bachata Class,” for couples and singles alike.
Solenne has been dancing for over 10 years and is known for her superb technique and infectious energy. From Hip-hop to Tango, she is familiar with a broad range of dance styles. Presently, Solenne is a dance instructor at the Rhythm Room Studio in McAllen. The studio offers dance instruction in Salsa, Bachata, Country, Ballroom, Cumbia, Zumba and more.

The great, great grandson of Henry Clay Davis, a famous Texas Ranger, will present about his ancestor during the Sunday Speaker Series program, “The Legendary Henry Clay Davis in Early Texas,” at the Museum of South Texas History February 9 at 2 p.m.
L. Michael “Mike” Davis is the great, great grandson of Henry Clay Davis. He created a booklet with the goal of telling his ancestor’s story to his family, and other history enthusiasts. Using Dick D. Heller Jr.’s manuscript, “The Story of Henry Clay Davis,” Mike Davis will discuss the life of the former Texas ranger, frontier fighter, enterprising merchant, state senator, brigadier general and founder of Davis Landing, a docking station for steamboats on the Rio Grande. In addition to the landing, Henry Clay Davis established barracks called Camp Ringgold, later named Fort Ringgold, in 1848. Henry Clay Davis is buried at the Rio Grande City Downtown Historic Cemetery.

For those that visit the Valley regularly, you know how much we talk about Fred Renk and the Santa Maria Bullring. Well, this year is his last year and he will be having one more event on February 16. Look for more about the event in our next issue, but until then, check out Jo Liston’s column On the Road with Jo on Page 35.
I told you last week we had been busy this January and our month wasn’t over yet. I tried to get everything in last week that we had done, but I tend to ramble and it got lengthy, so I wanted to talk about a few more things we did before we get our February rolling – which we already plan to attend six events in the next couple of weeks, including the Bull fight, Mission Mega Winter Texan Fiesta, the Valley Star Awards, and Glenn Miller Orchestra. Who knows what else will come up during the month though?

Knowing more about the Children's Haven International located near Reynosa has always been my desire. For years I had heard about the Haven, but I really did not know much about it. Many residents of local RV and Motor Home Parks regularly cross the border to volunteer their time and talent to Haven. Some park residents even sponsor a needy child to help them on their way. Sponsoring a child means you commit to donating $25 per month. I was especially impressed with how the sponsorship dollars are actually put into a pool that doesn't just help the one child you picked but will help all the children. Obviously, some children are more appealing than others; some are cute and lovable and apt to be chosen quickly by a sponsor. Others are not so cute and lovable but are shy and withdrawn. But all of them need our love and support.
