DSC 0016 webCities throughout the Rio Grande Valley are holding activities to remember and honor Veterans that have served. We have several stand-alone stories that highlight some major celebrations, so make sure you look through the entire issue so you don’t miss anything that might be in your area.

The City of Mission is having activities starting on Thursday and running through Sunday. Some of the activities include a Land of the Free Jeep Show at 5x5 Brewing Co., 801 Bryan Rd. The event is sponsored by the Boys and Girls Club and will start at 6 p.m.

On Saturday, November 11, Mission Crime Stoppers will host a 5k at 7 a.m. at the Mission Hike and Bike Trails (1414 S. Conway). It is a timed race and costs $25. For more information, call (956) 648-9326.

There will be a Veterans Day Ceremony and Flag Laying at the RGV State Veterans Cemetery, 2520 S. Inspiration Rd., in Mission, starting at 9 a.m.
Mission will hold their Veterans Day Parade at 12 p.m. in downtown Mission with other events after the parade.

The City of Alamo will hold a Veterans Day Ceremony on Friday, November 10, at 8 a.m. The event will be held at the Veterans Memorial Park, 311 N. Alamo Rd.

The VA Texas Coastal Bend Health Care System will hold events on November 9 featuring a BBQ. There are two locations. The McAllen VA Clinic, 901 E. Hackberry, will host theirs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Laredo VA Clinic, 4602 N. Bartlett Ave., will have their event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

City dignitaries, police honor guard and fire department honor guard, and pipe and drum corps and others will be at the McAllen Veterans War Memorial for a Veterans Day Ceremony. Several local school choirs will participate as well as the Daughters of the American Revolution, RGV Chapter.

“On Veterans’ Day, we remember those brave men and women who honorably served our great nation,” said McAllen Mayor Villalobos. “It is because of the millions of people who answered that call to serve that America is still the greatest country in the world.”

The memorial is located at 3129 Galveston Ave., next to the McAllen Convention Center.

Valley View Senior Living is hosting a Veterans Appreciation Breakfast for all Veterans on Friday, November 10 from 8 to 10 a.m. The center is located at 900 Camelot Drive in Harlingen. Call (956) 275-1044 for more information.

Texas Southmost College will hold a Veteran Day Ceremony on November 10 at 11 a.m. at their Performing arts Center in Harlingen. ComForCare Home Care is having a Veterans Appreciation breakfast and lunch from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on November 10. They are located at 2017 E. Tyler in Harlingen.

The City of Harlingen is honoring Veterans on Thursday, November 9, at 11 a.m. They will also be recognizing the life and service of Harlingen resident Porter M. Pile 2nd Lieutenant U.S. Army Air Corps who was missing in action for 78 years. He was interred at Arlington National Cemetery on October 31. The event will be held at 311 E. Tyler Ave.
