Hello and welcome back to South Texas! We are so excited that you have come back to visit us. If you are new to the Valley – you are in for a treat.

The Rio Grande Valley is such a great place to be – we say it every year. Great weather, great people, and great friends. I am looking forward to the cooler temperatures, of which we have had a bit of a taste this week. It helps encourage us to be outside a bit more than usual and it’s just the right time for everyone to make their return to the Valley – especially since we are saying goodbye to those hot temperatures that aren’t that nice.

Annual Fall Pow Wow makes its return next weekend

The Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas invites you to their 53rd Annual DAKEE SI (Fall Gathering) Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas Pow Wow on Saturday, October 28, from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Alton Community Center, 349 Dawes Ave. in Alton. Dancing and presentations will be held throughout the day. The event is free.

Visit the event to celebrate and experience American Indian culture, history, drumming, singing, and dancing. Vendors will be selling Native food, art, crafts, jewelry, supplies, and wares. There will also be raffles and cake walks. There is something for everyone.

I can’t believe we are beginning another Winter Texan season. We look forward to this time of year every year, but it seems to have really sprung up fast. The summer just didn’t seem that long. Other days it did feel long because it was just so hot!

But we are done with that now. Nice temperatures are returning. It seems to follow you as you return to the Valley.

There’s a reason why so many people call this place their second home. In fact, Mission, TX is one of the top 25 best places to live in the southwest. Many will tell you it’s because of the affordability, amenities, safety, and health care. Winter Texans will agree with the cost of living and will add the weather to that component as well. It’s also why many Valley cities have some top golf courses in the States.

And it’s a great week to start our first issue this season. We just had a great weekend here in Texas with an eclipse and we’ll have a total solar eclipse in April. So, it’s going to be an exciting season, and year.

We are so happy to see faces returning to this hidden gem of a Valley. Where visitors can play golf nearly all year and activities abound. We anticipate seeing many of our friends, making new ones, and attending events throughout the season.

Quilting: Just one of the things you do

What a wonderful contribution our Senior Citizens make to the Rio Grande Valley. They are just so willing to share their talents. Some volunteer to tutor in public schools. That is a great service not just to the teachers, but what a blessing for the students who may be having trouble reading or with math.

I think back to the time when my only grandson needed a tutor in math. He was a June baby and just a little behind in math comprehension. Today, at age 25, he is a straight A student in a prestigious law school on the East Coast. Many thanks to that tutor who was able to give her time and talents to help a child succeed.

RGV Padel Club to build Valley’s largest-of-its-kind venue for padel ball, pickleball

Two of the nation’s fastest growing sports are coming to Mission by way of a new sports complex.

The RGV Padel Club LLC will invest $2.7 million to construct a new 21,500 square-foot sports venue for padel ball and pickleball players across South Texas.
The venue will offer 18,000 square feet of court space – enough for seven padel ball and six pickleball courts – and a 3,500 square-foot building that will house a pro shop and a bar and lounge area located on the second floor so that patrons can watch games from above.
