Winter Texan Times: looking back 35 years

The Winter Texan Times has been featuring activities at the local Winter Texan parks since its inception, after all, that was part of the intent of the paper – to highlight the parks and the activities held within them.

In its first issue, and during its first season, the Winter Texan Times featured small articles submitted by the parks, talking about their activities, what the park had to offer, and more. This week I am going to delve into some of these activities and mention some of those that take place today.

Airport hosting “Día de Muertos Ofrenda Exhibit”

The McAllen International Airport (MFE) recently celebrated the opening of its annual Ofrenda Exhibit, now on display through November 7, in the airport lobby.

“By putting up Ofrendas, families in Mexico remember their loved ones as part of Mexico’s Día de Muertos. The folklore vested around this holiday continues to enrich our community,” said McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos. “This is the fourth year we display an Ofrenda in the Airport lobby for the community and travelers visiting our city.”

IMAS opens Aliento a Tequila exhibit November 10

20221102 IMAS Tequila Jimador webThe Aliento a Tequila (or The Spirit of Tequila) exhibition explores and celebrates the landscape, culture, and traditions that gave birth to tequila, Mexico’s national drink. In this series, photographer Joel Salcido includes the original distilleries that literally founded the industry, as well as several artisanal tequileras committed to the ancestral ways of making tequila from harvest to bottle. Aliento a Tequila is supported by L&F Distributors and opens Thursday, November 10 at the International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) in McAllen.

Planta Nativa returns to Quinta Mazatlan

The migration and plight of the Monarch

20221026 National Butterfly Center JMB 0156 webIf you have been doing any car travel recently, you are no doubt experiencing a different kind of roadkill. You have probably noticed on your car's grill work the remains of the orange-colored wings and bodies of the Monarch Butterfly. Those remains really make a mess on the front or our cars. How sad it is that so many of these beautiful migrating butterflies will never reach their wintering sanctuary in the state of Michoacan, Mexico.
